Listener Q&A: David asks: Just read an interesting article on MSNBC's website that suggests that even if you exercise regularly, sitting at a desk for any significant length of time is killing you. I've heard you talk about standing during the day, but this can be awkward for many jobs. Any comments on the article? http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/39523298/ns/health-mens_health/ In my response to David, I mention the Trekdesk Treadmill Desk. James asks: When you graze, is there an increased risk in regards to consistently elevated blood sugars? I know it will make a difference if I'm grazing on candy and refined/processed food items, but what if I'm grazing on highly nutritious food items? BrockSky asks via Twitter: @bengreenfield What do you think of www.caffedicorsa.com? I use it after a long run, in a lattè, with a banana and a handful of almonds. Joel asks: I've been experimenting with using amino acids in capsules during long training runs and marathons. Long story short I seem to notice a positive effect; feeling better during my runs, less pain and faster recovery afterwards when I use them compared to when I don't. Do you know of any research that supports this apparent effect and do you have any experience with this yourself? Hunter asks: I'm completing my first year of participating in road races and triathlons. I work full time and, like most age group athletes, do my long run and bike workouts on Saturday and Sunday. My work schedule has changed to four 10 hour shifts a week and now have Thursdays off as well as the weekend. How could I make best use of the added oppurtunity to train on Thursdays? anksH asks via Twitter: @bengreenfield ..have u touched on joggers nipple and what can be done to heal or protect them?? Painful!! Andrew calls in with a question about road bikes vs. tri bikes. Christian asks: How do you get the sweat smell out of heart rate monitor strap or iPod arm holder? In my response to Christian, I mention ActionWipes Spray. Rodrigo asks: I suffer from anguish and anxiety and have been taking clonazepam (similar to Prozac). Is there any suggestion you could have on some other supplement which does not need of a medical prescription, which really is  a pain and makes it double as expensive? Prozac: Panacea or Pandora? the Rest of the Story on the New Class of Ssri Antidepressants Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Lovan, Luvox & More. Peter asks: I have recently focused on healthy fat intake, vitamin d, and other supplement strategies. Bioletics testing is an option for me but I have good health insurance from work and plan to get bloodwork done soon. If you had to get a complete assessment of your health using standard blood tests available through a physician, what tests would you request? I plan to minimally have the following checked: TSH (I have mild hypothyroidism), testosterone, vitamin D, and vitamin B12. What else can I request to get these all done in one shot? Ask Ben a Podcast Question

  1. kenny says:

    Ben,
Just read the BIONX supermodel PDF's..whats your take? the Costs might put me into divorce court but the presentation makes sense just want your take. Obvouisly this would be the be all end all of supplements for me with the excpetion of maybe more Vitamin D/magnesium.. i am thinking of saving up and taking dosage for my first Ironman Race- maybe 5 months out if i can afford that. Is this something u are thinking about switching to fulltime? Whats your take on Month 1 on the product?

    1. It *is* a good supplement, with very high Douglas laboratory quality and super convenience considering you compress your entire protocol into single supplement. It's worth trying, and I am thinking about switching to it full time, although it can be tougher more me with all my sponsorship obligations, etc.

During the month I took it, I really enjoyed the convenience of the product, I completely quit taking everything else, and I felt just as good if not better.

      Ben

    Hi Ben,
I tried to access the webinar but it said the event was closed. I thought we would be able to access it even if we didn't attend.

    1. If you were unable to attend my USAT webinar "Advanced Injury Healing", you can get it here: http://bit.ly/47hAEY

  3. Val in WA says:

Hi Ben – a question not related to this podcast (but it is loaded on my iPod for my drive home tonight). I'll be having surgery next week to repair my right rotator cuff and spending 6 weeks in a sling. My main form of exercise is running, which will probably not be an option for me for awhile. Any suggestions as to alternate forms of cardio or other exercises to keep my fitness level up? I have joined a gym so I will have access to machines. Thanks!

    1. Check this out, Val: http://quickanddirtytips.com/health-fitness/exercise/how-to-exe…

Also, I'd recommend kickboard sets in the pool on your back with kickboard clutched to your chest, elliptical with arms only, stairclimber, recumbnet bicycle, upright bicycle with handlebars adjust to be close to your chest and high repetition leg press, squat, lunge, leg ext, leg curl, etc.

  4. joebruin88 says:

Hi Ben, I was listening to the Q&A portion of this podcast and have a question about the discussion re: BCAA. How often should they be taken to have any benefit? Each workout? I was thinking just taking them mainly for longer runs, but I'm wondering if I should take them more frequently so that a certain level of them are maintained in my system.

    1. Joe,

Taking in three to five grams of BCAAs before and after strenuous workouts may produce some beneficial effects.

Taking in anywhere per hour from 1 up to 40 grams DURING a workout may also be of benefit. I would suggest stating on the low end.

You could use them during every workout, but especially during longer workouts.
