What Is A Healthy Breakfast?

What is a healthy breakfast? How many eggs are OK? Is wheat good or bad? How much protein to eat for breakfast? What is the best fat-burning breakfast? What is the best breakfast for muscle? Since breakfast is our first meal of the day, it seems we have tons of questions about it! In this special audio release about healthy breakfast, I address the following questions and comments I've received from listeners:

If you're trying to lose weight should you wait until after a morning workout to eat? If so, how long?

Is it best to consume most of your carbs during breakfast? I typically eat oatmeal with almond butter and dried fruit sprinkled with cinnimon. I also try to add in a greek yogurt later for added protein as well.

Should we be eating wheat at all?

Should i consume just as many calories on my days when i skip breakfast as on days when i eat breakfast? Also, I have started sautéing a lot of my veggies in coconut oil for the health benefits instead of olive oil. Should I be avoiding oil all together or are the fats okay?

I eat eggs many times for breakfast on days when I don't have a morning workout because they stick with me longer. Otherwise I usually eat oatmeal with fruit and nuts. I know eggs have gotten back on the “good” list, but how many is too many?

I try to keep it very simple by adding all 3 components to a shake: 1 scoop of quality protein, 1Tbls Udo's 3-6-9 oil (fat), and either a 1/4 of ground oats or berries (carbs). This recipe keeps me going for most of the morning. What do you think of my approach?

I love my dry cereal/granola combo and a protein shake with fruit at work. I try to chose healthy options like plain Cheerios and an all natural granola with minimal added sugars. Are these choices ok (better than Cinnamon Toast Crunch) or can they be inflamatory?

In the 4-hour body Tim Ferris prescribes taking in 30 gm protein first thing in the morning to help promote fat loss. Your take on this? Thanks Ben!

Currently I am food journaling/calorie counting combined with exercising 3x week. What is a healthy percentage of calories to eat at breakfast if you're limited to a 1200-1400 daily calorie intake? Some days I eat 50, and other days I eat as much as 350.

My 13 yr. old son just won his science fair with a project on how breakfast affects grades. He used 2 500 cal. breakfasts, 1) 2 poptarts and oj, 2) 3 eggs, 3 bacon and whole milk. The average grade from volunteers for poptart days was 83, and 94 for the eggs and bacon. Seems obvious that it affects your brain!

What do you think? Do you have any more questions? Feel free to leave them below!

    There is no play button

  2. Hey Ben, the ancient Egyptians certainly did eat grains, but were known to have high levels of obesity and tooth decay. I think the paleo people have got it right on the grain/wheat issue, better off avoiding it altogether, as we weren't designed to digest it properly.
