Thomas Edison said, “The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest her or his patients in the care of the human frame, in a proper diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease.” In this free audio episode, released August 5, 2009, I interview today's “Doctor of the Future” and author of The Magnesium Miracle Dr. Carolyn Dean (I also answer follow-up questions from Podcast Episode #53 about who to contact if you want to get tested for the six performance factors)

Dr. Dean is not only a medical doctor, but also a naturopath, herbalist and acupuncturist. She’s authored 16 books including The Yeast Connection and Women’s Health, IBS for Dummies and The Magnesium Miracle. Radio, TV and magazines interview her regularly — including ABC, NBC and CBS. She's the Medical Director for the Nutritional Magnesium Association.

During our interview, Dr. Dean and I discuss her book and touch on some very interesting topics, including:

-Why people who eat healthy, exercise frequently, and take care of their bodies still need to worry about magnesium deficiency.

-Why a magnesium deficiency could give an athlete a heart attack (go to http://www.nutritionalmagnesium.org to watch the 2 minute video that shows why the calcium/magnesium balance is so important)ancient-minerals-magnesium-oil-8

-Ben Greenfield and Carolyn Dean's thoughts on exactly what an athlete could do during competition to maintain magnesium levels. Dr. Dean mentions“H2O Minerals angstrom supplement”andNatural Calm's “magnesium citrate powder” and Ben mentions “Ancient Minerals topical magnesium oil”.

-Different methods of testing magnesium levels (Dr. Dean mentions “exatest.com“). Also listen in to Podcast Episode #53 with Dr. Richard Cohen for other tests that you should consider.

-Exactly what needs to be on your grocery shopping list of foods that offer a high source of magnesium.

-The 26 different health hazards you risk because of a magnesium deficiency.

-And much, much more…

  1. Steve says:

Hi Ben, I'd love to listen to this podcast but it is no longer linked! Are you able to provide a new link?

  2. For athletes that encounter the dreaded diarrhea side effect when trying to take more than 400 or 500mg of magnesium at one time, Dr. Dean also recommends Jigsaw’s sustained release magnesium. One ironwoman I know takes up to 2000mg of jigsaw magnesium per day during periods of heavy training.

  3. George says:

Ben, Love the podcast. You break health and fittness down to an understandable topic.
Ive been a listener for about six weeks and have started taking APC time release protein and whey protein also training much harder.Lately ive had
persistent itchy skin, especially around my armpits and scrotum . Yes i wash well. I know your not a doc. but could this be diet or exercise
    related. Thanks

    1. I’ll answer this in podcast episode #56, George…

  4. I have a couple people trying out the kit rightnow. I'm still waiting on my results. That would be interested to use FSA dollars. I'd ask the guy who's doing the testing (who can also give you a 5% discount if you mention Ben Greenfield).

It would be Dr. Richard Cohen. For the testing, you’ll need to contact Bioletics and Dr. Richard Cohen at 888-371-1033 and tell them that Ben Greenfield sent you. They will hook you up with everything. He is the exact guy I interviewed and can give you the full range of tests: essential amino acids, ferritin, magnesium, calcium, testosterone, cortisol, vitamin D, pH…everything an athlete can and should be tested on.

    1. Mike S. says:

In researching Bioletics, I came across this article about Dr. Cohen.
      http://www.bendbulletin.com/csp/mediapool/sites/B…

Is anyone aware of this or is it true?

  5. steve says:

This topic is very interesting Ben. Also, has anyone tried the self testing kit? How much does it cost? and has anyone tried paying for it with flex benefit dollars?
