Ben:  On this episode of the Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast.

David:  We always say his secret to living is giving. There's a reason why I've been on a mission to contribute to others, not only to save lives, but also to find pain relief. Forget about my products. I don't want to sell you anything right now. What I want to sell you is on yourself because if you eat healthy, you probably don't need supplementation. People have been suffering for years. Normally under 30 days, these people are living a normal life pain-free.

Ben:  Health, performance, nutrition, longevity, ancestral living, biohacking, and much more. My name is Ben Greenfield. Welcome to the show.

Well, folks, you may have heard, if you've been listening to the podcast recently, that I went on a trip to San Diego. I always like to travel to areas of the world where I can find a bunch of kindred spirits and podcasts about all sorts of interesting things, and possibly throwing a little ocean and sun and sand. I won't complain about that. And recently, I was on a trip to San Diego. And you may have heard an interview that I released during that trip, one with a Navy SEAL Nick Norris, and then also one with a hydration expert Tracy Duhs. And when I was there, Tracy actually introduced me to a friend of hers named David Perez.

Now, I wound up having a dinner a couple of times with David, and man, we geeked out, we geeked out hardcore. It's kind of stuff that I wish I had had a podcasting microphone attached to my forehead for because we were talking about like curcuminoids, and these fringe ingredients in the supplements industry, this bright orange compound I'd seen years back in Finland that he had extracted, and just a fascinating backstory on him, too, in terms of how he came to be interested in things like neurological inflammation, and chronic inflammation, and curcuminoids, and a lot of the things that we just geeked out on. So, the fortunate thing is that although I did not have a podcasting microphone attached to my head, I actually did somehow manage to get David on today's show.

First of all, we have a big spring sale going on at Kion right now. Everything is going to be 15% off. Your discount code you can use for 15% off of everything from Kion, plus 25% off of any of the bundled supplement bundles, all you need to use is code SPRING at getkion.com/bengreenfield. So, you go to getK-I-O-N.com/bengreenfield. Use code SPRING to score the sweet dales from our Kion Spring Sale for our coffee, energy bars, aminos, creatine, you name it. You get 15% off. So, that's site-wide, and 25% off bundles, 25% off subscriptions. So, that's a good little goodie there.

This podcast is also brought to you by something else that's wonderful for your brain, and that is photobiomodulation in the form of red light, near-infrared light, and far-infrared light therapy. The device that I use for this is the only one I trust to be low EMF and super high power, so I don't have to waste my time for an hour standing in front of one of these devices. I've got their tiny little portable device up on my bedside. I also travel with it. I've got their giant full-body panels in my office. My kids have the Mini that they use when they wake up. Our dog loves to use it, snuggles up with them in bed at night. And they use their red light device called the Mini. All made by Joovv. They make the Go, they make the Mini, they make the Elite. Their new devices hot off the presses are sleeker, they're lighter with all the same power. They have a recovery mode, which uses pulsed technology to give your cells an extra healing boost. They have ambient mode, which allows you to enhance sleep with lower intensity light without all the artificial blue light that messes with your sleep and your circadian rhythms. These folks have just hacked light inside and out, and they're going to give you an exclusive discount on your first order. You go to joovv.com/ben. That's J-O-O-V-V.com/ben. Use my code BEN to your qualifying order. That'll give you an exclusive discount on your first order from Joovv. If you haven't yet messed around with the magic that is red light therapy, this is the way to do it.

Actually, David, are you at your condo that I visited you at when I was down in San Diego?

David:  Yes.

Ben:  Okay. So, you're probably looking out over a beautiful beach because I remember that particular room.

David:  Yeah. This morning was magical. I woke up at 4:00 a.m. to be on Success Magazine's podcast on Clubhouse. And the moon was setting right on the ocean right where the sun sets. It was a full moon and the whole ocean was lit up at 4:35 a.m. It was amazing.

Ben:  Well, speaking of Clubhouse, you also popped my Clubhouse cherry. I remember we were at a party the night before I had dinner over your house and I had no clue how to use Clubhouse. You literally opened Clubhouse on my phone for me and showed me how to go into a room and talk. And since then, I've actually recorded a couple podcast episodes at Clubhouse. So, thank you, I think, for introducing yet another social media platform into my life, which I needed kind of like any other hole in the head. But at least you showed me the ropes on Clubhouse. So, thank you.

David:  My pleasure.

Ben:  And anyways, I visited David. I actually went on a walk down by the beach where he's podcasting to me from right now and he made me some wonderful lamb chops, and we drank some wine, and talked more about supplements and the supplement industry as a whole, and David's intriguing backstory, which we're going to get into. But David, over a career span of like four decades, has founded a number of successful entrepreneurial ventures. He's launched several different disruptive technologies. He's been at the forefront, particularly, of coordinating things like large-scale natural disaster relief programs and rescue missions at ground zero and has now developed a nutraceuticals company that is specifically focused around some pretty interesting biotechnologies on the nanoscale that we'll get into. Don't worry. Those of you who are afraid of nanorobots taking over your body, we're not talking about nanorobots, but more nanotechnology when it comes to making molecules very, very small, so they have better bioavailability for your body, which is kind of cool. So, we're going to talk about that.

David also, like I mentioned, is very involved in these large-scale natural disaster relief programs. He was one of the guys who formed one of the first rapid response groups to go down to hurricane Katrina, did the same thing in Haiti when they were devastated by an earthquake. He's wrote and submitted over $22 million of grant proposals to keep hospitals and trauma centers functioning in order to save lives. He's received the Southern Command Commanders Coin and Deputy Commanders Coin order for excellence in the service of his aftermath for the Haiti earthquake relief, for the cholera response initiative. He has a real, real heart for helping people, which I like. But he also has a heart for geeky things when it comes to hunting down cool superfoods and harnessing their ingredients to make all of our lives better.

So, he's doing some pretty cool stuff, and he's also going to go to space. He's going to be one of the first people to go to space. I remember you telling me about that, David. So, let's start there because that's kind of a fun story. You've got a seat to go to space, I believe, on one of Richard Branson's new initiatives for civilians being able to go to space, or at least fly from L.A. to New York in like five minutes flat. So, tell me a little bit about that because I find that intriguing as well.

David:  Well, yeah. In 2005 when I was heading back from hurricane Katrina, I got home after two weeks. So, just non-stop. I had lost like 35 pounds. I sat down with my two boys. They were 8 and 10 years old at the time, and we're watching a Discovery Channel show talks about the future of space travel. And I looked at my boys, and they looked at me and they said, “Dad, that's so cool.” I said, “Yeah. I'm going to go to space one day.” My boys said, “Dad, stop lying. Dad, stop. Just stop kidding around. Don't lie.” I said, “No, son. I'm going to go to space.” And then, two weeks later, I'm on an airplane on Virgin Atlantic airplane for class going from LAX to London. And sitting next to me is a young kid, 18, 19-year-old, and he had his laptop, his IBM ThinkPad open. And I see these space shuttles going to space, these animations, and I'm like, “Wow. That's really cool.”

I said to the kid, I said, “Hey, what is that about?” He goes, “Oh, go talk to David Clark. We're just launching. My father and I are launching Virgin Galactic.” I said, “Yeah.” I said, “Who are you?” He goes, “I'm Sam Branson.” So, Richard's son's sitting there and I go see David Clark. I said to David, I said, “Are you really signing tickets?” He goes, “Yeah.” I said, “How much are they?” He said, “Okay.” I wrote him a check. I said, “I need a receipt as soon as possible.” I go back. Five days later, I'm home with my kids. I get a FedEx from Richard Branson, like this huge, like a 4-foot by 3-foot post. It looks like a huge booklet, real thin, and it's got the whole thing of going to space. And I showed it to my kids and my kids are freaking out. And that was my first foray into getting a ticket. I thought I'd be going in the next five years, but they got delayed.

And I met Richard at a couple cocktail parties over the next couple years and we love what he's doing, and we're supporting each other in the nonprofit world. He's been a great asset, especially in my Haiti mission. I couldn't have done it without him. He let us use his fleet of Virgin America planes to transport medicine, doctors, nurses, medics at a time when we need it. So, that's the good thing comes about the reason, I'll say, for living is giving, right? That's the ability to give back to others, and I've been so blessed over my lifetime to be able to give back. And Richard is one of those great philanthropists and great human being.

Ben:  The reason for living is giving. I love that. So, I have to ask. You actually write a check to go to space. Are these pretty hefty checks to get a seat to be on the spaceship, so to speak?

David:  Today, it's about–I think they raised it by 50,000. So, it's 250 now. It used to be 200,000.

Ben:  Wow. I hope that includes peanuts.

David:  Well, most people don't realize this. You go 95,000 feet and you're only in space for like 5 to 10 minutes floating, and then you come right back on the reentry. It's a glider coming back down. So, you're actually taking off. If you go to virgingalactic.com, you can see the whole process. So, you're actually launched from a bigger plane, SpaceShipOne. They call it Unity. And then, you have another shuttle that has like a booster, and that goes right up. So, you go from 50,000 feet to 95,000 feet. The whole round trip is less than an hour and a half. So, it's not like you're landing on the moon, or Mars, or anything. But I do want to go to Mars, so that's another–that's my next up is going to Mars.

Ben:  You don't have to put on an astronaut suit and step outside of a spaceship and go plant the flag on a foreign planet. You just basically brace yourself and go to space. And I'm curious, honestly, that's a chunk of change to go outside earth's atmosphere for five minutes. What's your motivation? Why is it that you want to go up there?

David:  Well, it allows Richard by supporting Virgin Galactic, they're a public company and they're doing very well, by the way, by supporting Virgin Galactic and Richard's mission. It's not about a joyride. It has nothing to do about a joyride. If everybody goes, you can go online, look at Space Billionaires. You'll see Bezos, Elon Musk, and Richard. Actually, it was my cameo appearance in that documentary. It was filmed by BBC, and that came out in 2018. I just saw it for the first time last week. During Super Bowl Sunday, I saw it. They sent me the link. I never downloaded it, but it's pretty cool because if you look at the vision about what space travel is all about, it's really about breaking new frontiers for manufacturing R&D.

So, if you think about it, Bezos' idea is to move all of our manufacturing, everything, to space where all–there's a ton of minerals up there in space, and like a battleship Galactica where you build these factories in space because everything is lighter, it's cheaper, and the temperature's right, and the conditions are right. And then, you'd make earth a residential. So, there'd be no pollution, no greenhouse gases, and earth would just be a residence. So, that's Bezos' idea and I love it. So, the space travel is all about getting things–like, imagine if it's your father or your mother that needed a heart and they had an hour to live. And to be able to transport a heart or an organ, it's amazing. So, FedEx would basically revolutionize. You could have things within hours, not days anymore.

Ben:  Oh, man. Heck, just being able to get from the west coast to the east coast in five minutes would be incredible in terms of time efficiency. I don't know how scalable that is from an affordability standpoint for most people, but I mean still, that in and of itself is incredible. And the whole idea of the mineral–I guess like, what would you call it, mining in space?

David:  Yeah.

Ben:  When we're talking about minerals, are you talking about minerals specifically that could be harvested and then used for technology here on planet Earth, like, whatever, computers, or cars, or something along those lines?

David:  Oh, yeah. There's a ton of minerals up in space that are just amazing. And it's easy to refine them, and produce them, and manufacture it. But you can manufacture cars in space. You can manufacture everything in space, and then you bring it down.

Ben:  You would actually manufacture in space?

David:  Oh, absolutely. Yeah. All your manufacturing could take place in space, everything.

Ben:  Wow.

David:  Zero gravity. Think about it. You have to watch that documentary.

Ben:  Okay. What's the name of the documentary again?

David:  Space Billionaires.

Ben:  Okay. I'll link to it in the shownotes.

David:  Yeah. Well, I'll post a link and I'll send you the link. You can post it on your website. It's great. Think about it. People were paying $20,000 for the concord. I think Richard could probably do it for 10 to 20,000, for the price of a first-class ticket, 25, 30,000 bucks. A lot of people, a lot of business people would do it to have those face-to-face meetings, especially–and on the Jewish religion, we only have 24 hours to bury our debt. So, now, I could tell you right now, just the Jewish community would spend that $25,000 to be in Jerusalem or in Tel Aviv to bury their dead and not miss the funerals out of respect. So, there's a lot of people that would do that. There's so many advantages here. Imagine changing the future of our warfare, our military planes.

So, Virgin Galactic in Mojave, I visited the factory. They actually make the engines, the fuselage, they make everything the space shuttle's made there. And all the rockets are made in Long Beach as well. So, they have some amazing technology. Richard's way ahead of the game. He's just amazing. George Whitesides and Loretta, George, the president of Virgin, they're amazing. What they're doing at that group, it's mind-boggling. I spent four days there with the whole team and filming this documentary, and just getting the underpinnings of what they're doing, and watching them build this stuff. They used to subcontract stuff before, but now they build it all homemade. It's going to change the airline industries. If you think Boeing and McDonnell Douglas and Airbus is interesting, these guys, smithereens, they blow them to smithereens.

Ben:  Wow.

David:  What Boeing will take 50 years to deliver, Richard will do it in five.

Ben:  Wow. I find him incredibly interesting. He's actually a guy who I also want to interview on my podcast sometime. I think I was telling you this just because I find what he does. Absolutely, absolutely fascinating. And so, yeah. I'll link to that documentary and everything that we discuss. If you're listening in right now, you can go to BenGreenfieldFitness.com, if I can talk today, /perez, P-E-R-E-Z, which is David's last name, BenGreenfieldFitness.com/perez. And I'll link to everything that David and I talk about. I would love to delve into space even more, but there are some other things that I really want to get a chance to delve into that I think people are going to find pretty interesting. You mentioned just now you're Jewish. I don't recall where you're from. Are you at northeast?

David:  No. I was born in Casablanca, Morocco. I'm a Sephardic Jew.

Ben:  Oh, really?

David:  I left two years old to Montreal and I've been in the U.S. since I'm seven years old. I got naturalized when I was 13. But yeah. My first language is French. And by the way, you spelled my last name wrong. It's P-E-R-E-Z. You said P-R-E-Z, just so you–just in case.

Ben:  Oh, oops. Yeah, P-E-R-E-Z, that's what I meant.

David:  Tony Perez, the baseball player.

Ben:  My brain is apparently still catching up with my tongue today.

David:  No problem. My ancestors came from Spain, so that's why Spanish last name. But in Morocco, we spoke French first, and then I learned the Hebrew, my second language. And English is my third language, and I never went to kindergarten. I went right to first grade when I was seven years old.

Ben:  Oh, wow, wow. And you actually had a really interesting experience that I think maybe even framed some of your interest in chronic and neurological inflammation in general. And that was basically a trauma that you shared with me at dinner one night, and it was actually a pretty profound story that I think would be very interesting for people to hear and give folks a little bit more background I think also about why you said something like the reason for living is giving, and why you've done so much, particularly for natural disaster relief. And I'm curious if you would be game to open up and share that story with the listeners.

David:  Okay. This is my first podcast and I've shared the story on–

Ben:  This is your first podcast ever?

David:  It is.

Ben:  Alright. Well, like I said, you popped my Clubhouse cherry, so I'll pop your podcasting cherry. My apologies for that analogy, but it's the best one I could think of in the moment. So, yeah. Go ahead and fill us in.

David:  When we came to this country, my father was not a good man. He never said he loved me, but he beat my mother and sisters almost every day. And my oldest sister at the Passover table last night told me how he took a hammer right her head and cut her head open. She had to go get stitches right on her head, which is sad, and it broke her nose. And he used to beat my mother up a lot. He was just not a good man. And at 10 years old, I put a butcher knife to my chest to basically say, “If you don't stop beating my mom, I'm going to kill myself.” And he stopped beating them. Police took him away and my sisters hadn't seen him until they buried him two years ago. We were on welfare for a couple years, then my mother remarried, and I hustled. I was selling seeds, garden vegetable, and flower seeds door-to-door at the age of 10, and whatever we can do to make a living, to bring food to the table. My mother worked three jobs to take care of us.

Anyhow, I got from selling seeds to raking leaves, and mowing lawns, and shoveling snow. And then, I realized that I could have my elementary school buddies to help me. And I hired five kids. I gave them a buck an hour and I kept the other three. I was making like 100 bucks a week when I was young, 10, 11. Then I started working as a stock boy in Philadelphia, made a couple hundred bucks a day, and then I ended up becoming a salesman and becoming a manager at the store at 15 years old. So, I was a hustler in Center City, Philadelphia, managing electronic stores, which if you guys remember the old record stores with the Israelis in Philadelphia, New York. And one of the owners there gave me a break and he gave me credit of 100 bucks. And I was buying and selling car stereos and techniques, turntables, Numark mixers, and big sound system Bose speakers, and so forth. So, I became a little DJ. I was having fun, making some good money, and I was buying fancy cars. And then, I started another company when I was in high school, and I grew that with my sister Linda. We kind of grew that pretty big. We've put a lot of money in the bank and we were doing great. I went out and used to buy all sorts of fancy cars. My passion was going fast. I didn't do drugs, no alcohol, but I love driving fast.

Ben:  Right. Or flying fast to space.

David:  Yeah, yeah. I mean, there's probably not a day I didn't go over 100. Ever since I was 15, my first car was a Fiat X1/9, then I got launched a Scorpion. Then I started buying high-speed Mercedes. My dream car was this Porsche Strosek. It was a 928 back in 1986, if you guys knew what the 928's. It's funny because the new Porsche panorama looks just like the Strosek was except it's four-door. But imagine that panorama and a two-door with a top speed of about 212 miles an hour.

Ben:  Holy cow.

David:  I was a V8. Yeah. So, that was my dream car. I waited a year for that car. And between that, I had a little Lamborghini, which sucked. It kept breaking down. And there was a Countach back then. But anyhow, that Porsche was my dream car and I drove that car so fast, everywhere I went, fast. My mother said, “You better sell that car. You're going to kill yourself.” And I actually had the car up for sale the morning of my accident. Long story short, I had a terrible car accident with a date and the car. Her name was Michelle. And I was driving too fast. She said to me, “Slow down. I'm scared.” And I said, “Don't worry. I've never been in an accident.” And I asked her what she wanted to be, what she was going to do in college. She was 18 years old. She just graduated high school. She was top of her class. She's beautiful, young woman, amazing. She says, “I want to be a doctor. I want to save lives.”

And a few minutes later, I swerved to [00:23:06] _____. It was a dollar tall in Atlantic City Expressway. I kind of swerved to miss a bunch of cars. I ended up on a medium, didn't hit any cars. Car spun out of control, hit a tiny little tree, and I was unconscious for a couple minutes, and gasoline was all over us, and a car stereo was blaring, and all electronics were going. And I woke up after a couple minutes and I hear–there's like 100 people surrounding the car. Everybody say, “Get away, get away. The car is going to blow up.” I'm praying to God somebody would help get us out. I was trapped in the car. We both had our seatbelts. She was unconscious and I was full of blood. I broke my nose, punctured my sternum–I'm sorry, punctured my heart, my sternum cracked horizontally, and I broke both knees, and I was full of blood. And I looked up, the sunroof was closed, and I just prayed to God, “Please, please help me get out of here.” And somehow, the sunroof just opened all by itself while the music was blaring. I slid out of the tiny little sunroof. They were like 18 inches back then. They're real small on the Porsches. And thank God I was skinny and I just got right out of the sunroof, and then nobody would help us. I'm asking people to come, “Help, people.” It's like gasoline was everywhere, all over the grass everywhere, and people saying, “No. Stay away.”

And the guy who took photos of my car that morning was watching me. He was there because my car was for sale. He was in the audience and he wouldn't help me. And it was crazy, but I broke the window, pulled her out, and she wasn't responsive, not a drop of blood on her, and shifts away very, very soon thereafter. And I ended up going to the hospital and I was there for five days, had a severe concussion for six months. I couldn't feel my head for six months. I pleaded guilty. I was convicted for vehicular manslaughter. I spent a year in a county jail in [00:25:03] _____. I spent five years doing probation. I was doing community service. I worked in a soup kitchen in Camden, New Jersey, feeding the homeless and the poor from 4:30 to 8:30 every night. And I had to report to my probation officer every Monday morning for five years. Changed my life. When I was five months in maximum security, I was in a little jail cell and it was tough.

Ben:  Wow, in maximum security for an accident. It was obviously not malicious intent, obviously. And not to put words in your mouth, but possibly, I suppose, it's excessive speeds and irresponsible driving. But I was unaware that that type of punishment was handed down.

David:  I was the first person in America convicted for vehicular manslaughter without drugs or alcohol, or any mental illness.

Ben:  No kidding. Wow.

David:  The judge was a Jewish judge, Steven Perskie. And I decided to do a bench trial, not a jury trial because I was guilty. I was racing with three other corvettes of my friends. So, we were racing down the freeway. So, I pleaded guilty and I told everybody. Even hundreds of people saw us racing. It was a Saturday night. It's like June 20th, 1987 is like you can't miss people racing in and out of traffic. It's bumper to bumper and we're just racing. It's the craziest thing. But look, at the end of the day, the judge said, “David, we investigated you. If you had financial problems, mental illness, tax problems, any problem, I could have not sent you to jail, but you knew what you were doing. That's why you're going to jail.”

I felt so ashamed, not because of the accident. I felt so ashamed of taking a young woman's life, who had her whole life ahead of her, who wanted to be a doctor. She wanted to save lives and yet her mother, her father don't have their daughter. And the brothers don't have their sister. And I wanted to take my life. I just wanted to end my life because I was ashamed, but then I realized if I take my life, what would it do to my sisters and my mother, my three older sisters that raised me? What would it do to them, and all my cousins? It's not fair to torment them because I saw my mother coming on the visits twice a week, and how she aged, and how she was mourning, not only the loss of the young woman, but mourning in the loss of her son, scared for me in jail.

So, I realized that guy's amazing plans–Michelle did not die in vain. She is basically my angel, my spirit. She's with me. Her spirit's with me every day and I honor her every day. I tell my story to literally over half a million kids in high school, but I tell my story every day to at least one person. And sometimes on the Clubhouse, I can reach a few thousand people a day. And her spirit let me to do the great works that we're saving lives. We've probably saved over a few million lives together. I got an interesting phone call Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. from Yvonne Cagle, who's a medical doctor, who's the astronaut, our new chief medical officer at Nurish.Me. She'll be joining us very soon here. She called me up with tears and I thought maybe she changed their mind, but she said, “David, I saw your arts and entertainment video, bio of the year.” And she says, “I've been crying for the past hour and I just want to let you know that don't blame yourself because Michelle is saving more lives through you right now than she could probably have ever saved as a doctor.”

So, we're on a mission. Michelle and I are on a mission to reduce inflammation and help peoples with all the suffering of the pain and help people with their mental illness because an inflamed gut is an inflamed mind, inflamed brain, inflamed body. People do crazy things. They commit suicide, they kill other people, they do all these school shootings, they go to war. So, that's the mission, and that's why we're here today is to talk about our mission and honor Michelle and her family that have given me the courage to speak for the first time to millions of people through you.

Ben:  It's a powerful story, and it's one of those things where when you told me this story–and I had forgotten many of the details because this was about two or three months ago in San Diego. I simply remember being overwhelmed by really hearing how someone like you at the pinnacle of what many would view as extreme success and having made it, so to speak, fast cars, lots of money, and a thriving business, basically experience what you went through, and coming out the other side with this profound realization that there is so much more to life than personal success. And as you voiced once again, the reason for living is giving. And even the reason for owning wealth, for example, is to be able to spread that to other people.

And I wish that others who have found success were able to hear this message because it's so easy to be in this for yourself and to experience that ultimately unfulfilling level of happiness derived from personal wealth, but at the end of the day, basically lose your own soul because you've kept that wealth to yourself versus spreading it to others and helping others. And I really admire what you've done with your wealth since then because it seems like that really lit a fire under you in terms of what you began doing after that point with your relief efforts and your rescue missions, and these natural disaster programs that you became involved in.

David:  Yeah. I don't think I would be the person that I am today if that tragedy had not happened. It redefined me. I reinvented who I was because I was a cocky young guy who was the youngest. I employed 180 people. I had offices in five states and a very successful business. I was one of the largest Sony dealers in America for five years in a row. And I was also in the cell phone business. I had just started two years before in the wireless business and operated in California as one of the first privately owned reseller. Eventually sold that business to Craig McCaw, McCaw Cellular. They bought the assets of LA Cellular. And then, I sold one other business to a big company. It was owned by Motorola.

So, we got into the software business, billing and rating systems, and fraud control for cell phones. So, we had a big success in the wireless sector, and I was at my peak, and I had to leave for a year. But they say that the comeback is always greater than the setback. So, for all of you people out there who thought life over after a tragedy, lift yourself up, honor the people who you may have hurt, the people you may have killed, the people who may have died in an accident. I spent a lot of time with inmates after these seven months in minimum security, and I was able to go in there and give them all a hug and tell them all I loved them and picked them all up because when I got there, nobody was guilty. They were all innocent. When I left, about 80% of them admitted that they had done the crime and they were to do the time like me. I was the only guilty guy in the jail after five months being released out of maximum security going to minimum security.

But we can do great things with our lives no matter what. We all are going to have a tragedy, whether we lose a family member. Everybody, you know somebody that's going to be in an accident. I mean, car accidents, it's like 1 in 100,000. If you google the odds of dying in a car accident, a bicycle, you'd be surprised. So, we're all going to know somebody. So, honor those people and give back to, and pay it forward, and find a way. And that when you pick yourself up out of the ashes, I can just tell you, I've lost everything three times financially in my life. Once with my car accident, and the other two times with the stock market decline in 2001 and 2008. I had to start all over in 2008. Both my brother-in-law, we got clobbered, and he turned around and started Suja Juice. I helped him build that company. And then, just recently, started Rowdy Energy, which is another amazing company.

And so, our family has faced a lot of resilience over the years, but we bounce back every time because two things. One, we love ourselves, we believe in God, and we're grateful. If you practice gratitude, and if your attitude is always gratitude, people will surround you. They will help you. I had to disclose my accident to when I sold a few companies and when I–every time I build companies and I bring partners on–even Michael Dell invested in my company, my fourth company, and I told him about my accident. Right up front, before you even want to see me or talk to me, I said, “Here's the deal. So, I'm up front. You got to be transparent with people. Let them know your story because everybody has a beautiful story, good or bad. It's your story and you don't want to hide from your story. This is the story.” So, I had a second accident. My second accident, I was driving, this time my daughter was in the car. She was eight years old five years ago.

Ben:  So, this was several years after the initial accident?

David:  Yeah. The first accident was in 1987, 34 years ago. It's a long time, right? Let me just get that right. Let's see. At '87 to '20. Did I get the math right?

Ben:  Yeah.

David:  You may want to edit this section.

Ben:  Approximately. Approximately 37, yup.

David:  Yeah. So, it was, yeah, approximately 37 years. This June will be 37. Okay. So, this last accident was five years ago with my daughter. I'm driving. I'm parked at a red light–not parked, I'm stopped at a red light. My foot's on the brake. Family, a guy driving with his son in a car seat, and his wife in the passenger's seat. He doesn't see me. I'm at the UTC Mall in San Diego. Christmas day, boom, rear-ends meet, doing about 40 miles an hour. He never saw my car. He apologized, ripped my back to pieces, my L4, L5, S1. Got my spinal cord caught in my disc, and I was in so much pain for 10 months. I couldn't sleep, and I couldn't sit down, and I couldn't lay down for 10 months, but I could do yoga, I could run, no problem. But I had this crazy pinched nerve, and my leg would get numb, and my life was miserable. I was in so much pain.

I tried every natural remedy, nothing worked. I ended up having five epidurals over the next eight months, nothing worked, not one epidural relieved the pain. And I went to different pain clinics, three of them, and nobody could help me. And then, I was on [00:36:53] _____ for two weeks, no pain relief. I was on a morphine drip for three days, no pain relief. And I went around the world looking for a natural remedy that could remedy my pain because I did not want to have surgery. I refused to have surgery. In pain, I went on an airplane to South Africa to Johannesburg. I met somebody there who told me about the product she was using that could help reduce pain. And then, I said, “Where did you get the product?” She goes, “Well, the guys at the University of Miami.” I'm like, “Oh, you're kidding me.” So, I fly back home. I called him up. He FedExes me a bottle. The next day, I take 10 drops of this turmeric extract, curcumin, 10 drops in one hour, all my pain goes away. And I'm like, “It's impossible. It's got to be a miracle.”

Ben:  And this was CoreCumin?

David:  Yup. It's the CoreCumin. You could find it at Nurish.Me, N-U-R-I-S-H.Me. So, there's no “O” in Nurish.

Ben:  So, is this that same super-duper dense curcuminy, very small, black bottle that you gave me when we were down in San Diego?

David:  Yup. It's in a black Miron Glass. Those are our new packaging. It's 30 mils. And then, we also have the plastic bottles. Some people like the plastic because you can squeeze it and squirt it other people just like the glass because it'll stay fresh in that glass for 10 years and the plastics [00:38:18] _____. But that Miron Glass, amazing stuff.

Ben:  Well, howdy, howdy, ho. I want to interrupt today's show to tell you about Robert Slovak. I recently interviewed him. It's going to be released on March 20th, if you're listening to this podcast at the time that it comes out. One of the smartest guys when it comes to water filtration, when it comes to minerals, when it comes to biohacking your water, so to speak. And he's put all of his best ideas together at his Water and Wellness website. So, what Water and Wellness is going to do is they want to give you a free 30-day supply of the same Quinton minerals that Robert and I have talked about in multiple podcast episodes with him. And they also want to give you these special replacement filters for any water filter device, particularly their AquaTru Countertop Reverse Osmosis device, one of the best countertop water filters out there, doesn't build up bacteria in the tank like most RO filters do. Free set of replacement filters up to two years use without filter replacement. That's a $60 value, and these Quinton minerals. That's a total savings over 300 bucks when you go to waterandwellness.com/greenfield. That's waterandwellness.com/greenfield.

And then, another cool product that you can utilize, I use this for a meat rub, I use it to flavor water, I use it in smoothies. It's like a shotgun formula for your blood. It's got everything in there that supports your blood, Siberian ginseng, and cordyceps, reishi mushroom, all these natural herbs, and medicinal mushrooms, and berry extracts, but in a very low, low sugar delivery mechanism, unlike a lot of, say, like the red juices you'd get from the grocery store or a juice shop. It's called Organifi Red. You can get 20% off of that, too, if you go to Organifi with an “I,” organifi.com/ben. It gets you 20% off. Amazing for the immune system as well, this stuff. And I also use it as a meat rub, did I mention. It's really great for that, shockingly good. So, Organifi Red, Organifi with an “I” dot com/ben.

I think we need to back up here just a second because I could go to Whole Foods right now, or any number of supplement websites and find curcumin. And obviously, I don't think it's any secret in the nutrition industry that in many cases, it is often blended, either the turmeric or curcumin with black pepper or piperine to not only enhance absorption, but also to allow it to pass through the digestive tract where curcumin would normally elicit most of its anti-inflammatory action and instead be able to act systemically for things like neural inflammation or musculoskeletal inflammation, for example.

But I looked at the label of what you gave me. It doesn't appear to have black pepper in it, but what's the actual difference with the curcumin like this? Like, what exactly are you doing on a mechanical level to allow for it to act differently than other forms of curcumin?

David:  First of all, we have a macromolecular complex of my cells, and these are very nano-sized particles. They're under 8 nanometers. They've measured as small as 1 nanometer. So, we do dynamic light scattering, we do all sorts of analytical chemistry when we make each batch to confirm what we're providing. And it's tested by five independent labs including Informed Choice for Sports. So, when I tell you this thing is small, these things are unbelievable. They don't need piperine because we're the only water-soluble curcumin in the world. Curcumin is a fat-soluble molecule. It's not water-soluble. So, that's why people have to take it with dairy, or fat, or piperine. We don't need any of that. And we don't use any surfactants.

There's other people like Solgar and other companies, NovaSol, they use polysorbate 80 as surfactant, which provides the–it's the way they get it into the bloodstream. Very toxic. You only want to use that for no more than five days in a row. It's also in Dulcolax. And it says it's a warning label, “Don't use for more than five days.” My ex-girlfriend in London had perforated her intestine. It's known in rats and animals to cause cancer. A lot of liquid products have polysorbate 80. So, my advice to anybody who's taking any of those stuff, please be careful. Check with your doctor, and just go to PubMed and look at the research. There's a ton of research on those. So, we're the only liquid turmeric extract that's approved by Informed Choice for Sports for Olympians and professional athletes, the NFL, NBA. We have a lot of celebrities and a lot of professional athletes that take the product. It's tested not only for every pesticide, including glyphosate, but it's tested for every banned substance, 209 banned substances. So, that's the beautiful thing about our product.

Ben:  Yes. It's really interesting. If I can interrupt real quick because I did a lot of research on turmeric in the development of a joint support product that I developed for my company Kion that I was telling you about. I think I said you bought all this stuff so you could compare it. And I decided based on some of the issues that I was running into with curcumin bioavailability to instead isolate what would be called the turmerosaccharides from turmeric itself, which are also these kind of like water-soluble components of turmeric that elicit a lot of the joint support and the anti-inflammatory activities of turmeric while bypassing some of the absorptability issues of curcumin.

And so, that was how I hurtled that obstacle, so to speak, was by taking these turmerosaccharides, then blending them with some other things like proteolytic enzymes, and serozymes, and serrapeptase, and some other things that break down scar tissue, and decrease inflammation. But this idea of taking the actual turmeric, isolating the curcumin, and then rendering it down to a nano particle size that's bypassing the need for the addition of BioPerine would be another way to accomplish this. And what's super interesting is you need, in that case, a very small amount. We're talking about a few drops, right?

David:  So, let me go through some of the science because a lot of people are confused. They're taking turmeric tablets. The number one search term on Google in dietary supplements five years in a row right now, number one is turmeric. Curcumin is at the bottom of the list. It doesn't even appear. It's like almost nil, which is shocking. When I started four years ago, I've asked 100 MDs, “Do you know what curcumin is?” Only 1 out of 100 knew what it was, medical doctors.

Ben:  It's crazy.

David:  It's crazy. I can't even tell you how many naturopaths that I've talked to, and nutritionists don't know what curcumin is. There's about 80% of them do know it, 20% of them don't know it, which blows me away. So, everything you buy at Costco's and CVS, it says turmeric. You don't want to buy turmeric because turmeric only has 3% to 5% of the bioactive ingredients of curcumin. So, when you take a turmeric root, you'd have to take like 3 pounds of turmeric to get what we give you in one serving. Now, one of our servings is 15 milligrams, one serving. We recommend three a day every eight hours.

The science, the literature, if you look at PubMed and you look at all the research–and you guys could DM me. I have a 500-page book of all the clinical research on curcumin. It'll blow everybody away. But the science, the literature shows what we're doing with 15 milligrams you need between 1,500 and 5,000 milligrams of curcumin. Now, multiply that times 33, 33.3. You need 1,000 milligrams, you need 33,300 milligrams of turmeric, and you just couldn't–it's like taking–imagine if you'd have to take a whole bottle of 90 pills to give you what we give you in a daily serving because of turmeric. Of curcumin, it's about 33 times less of curcumin. So, the reason is one, more water-soluble. Two, we have found the way using a sunflower lecithin phospholipid, not polysorbate 80, not any aggressive surfactants, something that is clinically proven.

In our clinical studies that we've done, we can show the uptake and how long it lasts. Our curcumin, most people will see it last between 10 and 14 hours. We have a lot of people say up to 26 hours. We had one woman, which is [00:47:42] _____ three drops, lasted her three days. Her name is Heather Harold. She's on Amazon and she's on our website review. She's an amazing woman, and it's done a lot for her. But the bioavailability of curcumin is everything, to get it in the bloodstream. If you put the drops under your tongue, it gets in there in seconds. The pain relief is instantaneously normally within. It's like a Tylenol, Advil. It's an alternative to a lot of pain relief, but it could take anywhere from one hour to three hours, depending on your body chemistry. For me, it worked in an hour. For some people, it works 20 minutes, 30 minutes. It all depends on what you eat and your body chemistry, your diet. If you're having gluten in dairy, it's not going to work as well. I could tell you that right now. You got to take it with plain water on an empty stomach. It's a game-changer.

Ben:  But you don't mix it into the water, do you? Because I think I did this and you told me not to.

David:  Yeah, yeah. No, you can mix it into the water. It's fine and drink it. It'll go into your small intestine. If you put it under your tongue in your mouth, it'll go right into your receptors, and it just gets into your brain a little faster.

Ben:  Yeah. Well, in experimenting with the bottles that you gave me, I notice it a lot more when I just put it in my mouth and hold it for about 60 seconds or so. And that's interesting that you talked about the phosphatidylcholine aspect because–I wrote this article about some of the barriers, again, I was running into when it came to isolating some of these curcuminoids from turmeric, and also some of these turmerosaccharides. And what a lot of companies will do instead of the black pepper is they'll actually add some type of phosphatidylcholine like a PTC, which actually, in terms of its effects on the vagus nerve, on leaky gut, on SIBO, on a host of issues, it's actually pretty interesting itself. The body produces phosphatidylcholine. But in stressed individuals or people with compromised guts, phosphatidylcholine support actually seems to do a lot for people. And you would find it in something like a lecithin. That's why sometimes it can be beneficial if you're doing a superfood smoothie in the morning, for example, put a little a sunflower lecithin powder in there and you can increase your availability of phosphatidylcholine. Are you using phosphatidylcholine in the curcumin supplement itself, or simply using that as one of your extraction methods?

David:  It's a phospholipid. It's a sunflower phospholipid. This is what we encapsulate the curcumin. So, it's like imagine a bulletproof. We encapsulate the curcumin inside this sphere. It's a tiny nanosphere. And what that allows us to do is survive the stomach acid. So, there's no degradation in the stomach acid.

Ben:  Right. It'd be similar to like a liposphere type of technology, something like Chris Shade at Quicksilver Scientific does with a lot of his compounds. He uses things like that that are wrapped in a lipid sphere to enhance absorption and to bypass some of the issues with the acidic nature of the stomach. And you're doing something somewhat similar with curcumin, but you're also presenting it in more of a very small nano-size molecule.

David:  You got it. Exactly.

Ben:  Okay. Got it.

David:  Exactly. We have an efficacy. We have higher bioavailability. It's proven physiological effects at 48 milligrams a day. It's at least 2 to 20 times higher than other curcumin products on the market. And all you have to do, there's a 100% money-back guarantee. If you try it, it doesn't work for you, just let us know. Just refund your money. I don't think we've ever had to give a refund to anybody. So, that's in two years in our–we've been beta testing the product for a couple years. We just launched the product, and you can get it now in the new Miron Glass bottles.

Let's talk about what it did for you. I mean, you had a bad shoulder, and you've tried all these products out there, and your pain went away, and I don't know, 20, 30 minutes?

Ben:  Yeah, yeah. It was pretty profound how quickly it worked. I try not to do too many supplement podcasts because I don't want to confuse people with all these different compounds that are out there. But I was pretty impressed with how it works. And you've got more than curcumin in there. Didn't you throw like some vitamin D and some other compounds in as well?

David:  We have an original version, which is the red box that you'll see on there, and we also have a single pack and three-pack. But the regular version that we started with does not have any polysaccharides. And I'll talk about the polysaccharides and why we have polysaccharides in a minute. But the regular version has 12% of your vitamin D3. We use cholecalciferol, vitamin D3, and there's B12. We use methylcobalamin B12. It's 26% of your RDA per serving. So, if you take three servings a day, you'll get almost 80% of your vitamin B12. And we have iodine in here from potassium iodate. So, there's about 7% per serving. So, if you take three servings a day, you'll get 20% of iodine and potassium in there. So, there's a little bit of potassium.

Now, as far as curcumin, not only because we use the purest curcumin you can get. And by the way, MD Anderson was doing a clinical trial on human breast cancer a couple years ago, and this is to give you a little idea. It wasn't our product, it was somebody else's product, which is one of the top two leading brands on the market. I won't mention their name. At the last minute, they decided to test the product for heavy metals. Most of the curcumin that comes from India is laden with heavy metals.

Ben:  Yeah. So, there's a problem with a lot of ayurvedic herbs. They did a big study on toxicity and liver toxicity in response to ayurvedic herb use and it's rampant, not only do the metals, but other accumulated toxins in ayurvedic herbs. You have to be super careful.

David:  Especially glyphosate. The glyphosate was through the roof. So, here, they thought they were going to do a clinical trial to get people healthy, but they're poisoning them. So, about 80% of the curcumin that comes from India, we've tested it all. Most of it is toxic. We get our curcumin from a U.S. supplier. They bring it in from overseas and they use multiple countries. Could be Colombia, South America, it could be all around the world. It could even be China. But every single batch is tested by them before we get it for heavy metals, glyphosate, and then we test every single batch through five independent labs for heavy metals.

So, we're the only ones that have–we have the most comprehensive certificate of analysis of any dietary supplement or drug company that I know of in the world. I've looked a lot of drugs. Nobody does what we do. Our COAs are like–the raw ones are 12 to 20 pages long. We condense them into five or six pages, but we test for every single thing. We spent $400,000 just testing our product, our last two batches, to make sure they're safe, $400,000. Most small companies, they don't spend $400,000 to build a company because dietary supplement with the DSHEA Act, anybody can build stuff from home and sell it. The only time you get regulated or called by the FDA is if somebody gets hurt or sick. So, the DSHEA Act of 1994 with all these synthesized vitamins and all these toxins, it's a joke, it's a total joke. We make our product in Las Vegas in a USDA FDA drug facility, and they also have an FDA dietary supplement license. So, they make drugs, barbiturates, because this product operates and works when–you know it how fast it works. It operates very similar to a drug. It's very, very powerful, very strong.

Now, depending on your body weight, we have a weight chart. Everything is done by weight. So, that's how we got it. So, when the FDA looked at–they just happened to be there the day we were bottling our product. They did their five-year inspection of the facility in Vegas that we co-pack our stuff in. And the FDA guy was looking at our box. He goes, “God, I wish every drug everybody would do this,” because this stuff is safe for your pets as well. So, we go by weight. It's also safe for babies, and children, and pregnant women. We've tested this a thousand and ten thousand times RDA levels. We tested it not only in humans, we tested it in nude mice in China. And we have R&D facility in China where we test this in nude mice. We've tested it with all sorts of chronic diseases, inflammatory diseases, and this stuff works. It works really, really well. We've given away to influencers and people that are sick with every type of chronic diseases, mainly joint pain, arthritis. We've given over $3 million worth of product away.

Ben:  Yeah. I know people are going to ask this, by the way, because when you look at a lot of the data on curcumin, you are correct. I mean, you see the anti-inflammatory effect, the inhibition of NF kappa-B, and COX-2, and a lot of these things people would normally take some ibuprofen for, but without a lot of the toxic side effects of a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. You see it acts as an antioxidant. It can quell free radicals. You see basically reduction in liver and plasma, triglycerides. When you look at a lot of the data on curcumin from a lipid standpoint, you see that it can act as a heavy metal-binding agent, and so it can affect neurological diseases like Alzheimer's, even be useful for like TBI, post-concussive syndrome, things like that. It's also an anticoagulant, which is why you got to be careful with it if you're taking a curcumin like this with any type of a blood thinning compound like warfarin, for example, or leading into a surgery.

But ultimately, when you look at the actual data in humans, it's incredibly impressive. Some people may highlight an interview that I did last year with a guy named Paul Saladino, who is a carnivore diet enthusiast who believes that many of these plant-based molecules are actually toxins in disguise and are simply toxic to humans because they're things that the plants have developed to protect themselves against consumption by mammals. And when you look at, for example, one paper that he had brought up called “The Dark Side of Curcumin,” which appeared in the International Journal of Cancer–and I'll link to that in the shownotes if you go to BenGreenfieldFitness.com/perez. What they cite in that particular paper are a host of kind of like in vitro studies, like test tube studies with a high-dose curcumin on, for example, human cells in culture. And they found that there appears to be some amount of chromosomal alterations and induced DNA damage raising the theory by the authors of this paper that curcumin could possibly contribute to some type of carcinogenic effect.

And there was a concern in the paper, this potential for toxicity. And the other thing that they actually talked about in that paper, by the way, was that it might affect systemic iron metabolism, like people who have sub-optimal iron status might notice that their iron levels decrease even more inducing something like iron deficiency anemia if they are fed high-dose curcumin. And they had a study in rodents where mice are fed diets, pour in iron, and give it a bunch of curcumin, and they noted that the iron levels in the mice who were given curcumin dropped even lower. And granted, I think in some cases, people could use some iron remediation. I think hemochromatosis or iron accumulation is often just as big an issue as iron-induced anemia. But the thing is when you read a paper like that and you see some of the things that you might notice in like low iron mice or in in vivo human cultured cells and the induction of some DNA chromosomal abnormalities, when you look at all that, that's in the lab. But then when you take curcumin to the streets and you give it to actual humans living in real conditions, all you see are a host of beneficial side effects.

And so, for me, I like to see what goes on when people are actually given something like moderate to high-dose curcumin over a long period of time. And you see a host of beneficial effects that really back up this whole idea that curcumin has been in the form of turmeric like an ayurvedic superfood/wonder herb for a long period of time. And so, I personally am not concerned about curcumin supplementation. Again, if you're like going into surgery, you're on blood thinners, maybe you have extremely low iron levels, I would say there might be a few cases where you'd want to be careful and at least do some tracking also to see how it's affecting you. But ultimately, curcumin, it's like a sledgehammer, like a Swiss Army knife in terms of everything that it seems to be able to do.

David:  So, let me just rebuke the first one where it could cause cancer. Jasmine, Selima (ph), Rafin (ph), I can give you names of women. A lot of their symptoms–and they're all in full remission after given two months to live, but we have some amazing data that we've done even in animal studies with human breast cancer tumor cells, people with breast implants. We're talking about some very, very sick women, not one or two. We're talking about hundreds that have been using our product for years now. One woman got her eyesight back, women that got–when it comes to Crohn's and a lot of diseases that–well, I'm not even a doctor, but I'm not saying we cure anything, but I can tell you their symptoms, they all go into remission. People with colitis, arthritis, we're talking hours and days, women that haven't had their period in six months to two years, they were told they could never have children.

You can go on our YouTube channel. You could see this little study we did in Russia and Moscow. It's all subtitled in English, but these women have found that turmeric extract, our CoreCumin, has changed their lives, especially for women that had all sorts of inflammatory diseases, endometriosis, polycystic disease, people that have been suffering for years. We're talking two days, one in two hours, other women, two weeks. But normally, under 30 days, these people are living a normal life pain-free. So, our goal at Nurish.Me is to reduce inflammation and to stop the suffering. We're all going to have pain no matter what if you have children, you have your period, you're at the gym, you're lifting weights. We're going to have pre, post-recovery. Everybody has pain. It doesn't matter. But it's our choice if we want to suffer.

You have a choice to suffer. You don't have to suffer. And the solution is a good, healthy diet, honor your body. Forget about my products. I don't want to sell you anything right now. What I want to sell you is on yourself, self-love, because if you eat healthy, you probably don't need supplementation. But if you want to live longer, better quality of life, then use us, use Nurish.Me as your backup. I want to be your insurance policy. Same with Kion. Kion could be your backup. But if you can go out and buy the foods, harvest those foods, but you don't have to grind a lot of turmeric root to get what we give you in three drops. So, that's the difference here because I didn't believe in any supplements, Ben. I didn't believe in supplements until I got hurt. This is how I started Nurish.Me. I didn't believe in any supplements, and then I saw what was happening with our juice business at Suja. It brought me back to life. Green juice, amazing.

As I started juicing, I realized, wow. Then I went to Garden of Life as–being a vegan, I needed some protein, and I discovered Garden of Life protein powder. And now, I'm using Organifi Protein Powder even better. So, as I started using Organifi and I started looking at all these Ayurveda, and then when I saw this turmeric extract, get rid of my pain, the NF kappa-B, all of the receptors that we're seeing here. Just amazing what happened, absolutely amazing. So, I realized that we got something very big here that we can share with the world. I just want to share people, honor your body. You are what you eat. Food is medicine, medicine is food. And if you live life with gratitude and appreciate what Mother Earth has given us.

I just googled on PubMed's curcumin. It's the most researched molecule in the history of mankind. For over 5,000 years, this thing has been researched. Okay? And there's over 16,000 white papers, over 500 clinical human trials, thousands of animal studies, and everything is positive. There is no negative, and you can't even overdose. We've tried to find an LD50. Water, you can die of drinking too much water, but we could not. I could take three bottles of this turmeric right now. The only thing that happens to me is my shirt turns yellow. My white and pink shirts turn yellow.

Ben:  That's funny. Is that because it comes out your pores?

David:  Yup. Absolutely. So, we know it metastasizes. So, we know we're getting into your bloodstream. Think about it. Anybody who wants to try it and do a TikTok video, I'll send you five bottles. Just DM me.

Ben:  There you go.

David:  It's very, very powerful. And if you look at the studies, and I have a book, it is very, very safe. There is no toxicity, too. So, whatever this guy wrote about it, I don't know about the Ironman (ph), so I'm not an expert on that. I don't take any Ironman. I do take some magnesium, but it's very safe.

Ben:  I'll link to that dark side of curcumin article in the shownotes if folks want to check it out. But David, I think that it's a cool product, but I would be remiss not to ask you about something else you were talking to me about that I also found intriguing. And earlier, I mentioned that sunflower lecithin is kind of a cool ingredient to add into your smoothies, like your morning superfood shakes or whatever, just because it's so rich in choline, and allows for more availability of this phosphatidylcholine that helps so many people out when it comes to their gut health, their vagal nerve function, et cetera. And I even keep a little sunflower lecithin handy in my pantry for that reason. I think I use the NOW Foods Sunflower Lecithin Powder is the brand I have right now.

But you showed me this little bottle of powder that you had, and it was actually in the refrigerator, and you refrigerate. You said it was better refrigerated. It had sunflower lecithin in it. And you sent me home with one bottle, which, unfortunately, I ran out of within like a week. But I found it super interesting because it wasn't just sunflower lecithin. You had something else in there, or a few other things in there, but one, in particular, was a rice bran. And I think a lot of people hear rice bran and they're just like, “Yeah. It's some ground-up grain and you'd be careful with that.” And they're concerned about arsenic or whatever. But you have this thing that's almost like a powdered nootropic brain-building thing that has the sunflower lecithin in it, but then you've also got, in addition to like tart cherry and N-acetylcysteine, and I think you have inositol hexaphosphate in there, which is a really good phytochemical, you've got this stabilized rice bran.

Now, what is it about rice bran that you find so intriguing? Because I hadn't really talked to people about it much, and then you were filling me in about it I think at dinner. And this other product that you guys do at Nurish called CogNurish, is that what it's called, CogniNurish?

David:  Yeah. It's called CogniNurish, and it's a powder, and that's the product that we started out with. All of our research in clinical trials at the University of Miami was done with this. My partners, they did a bunch of research over a three-year trial for Alzheimer's, dementia, also with HIV. And they also did a non-alcoholic fatty liver disease study. They did a bunch of studies, University of Miami, with rice bran and this formulation. So, we have a new formulation that's coming out. It'll be out in a few months here, which is exciting. It's been tested for over a year. We announced it a year ago, but we test everything very vigorously. It took us a couple years to come out with all of our products because of shelf life, stability. And we run clinical trials on everything, which is exciting. So, we want to make sure this stuff is safe. Rice bran itself is one of the most powerful molecules in the world. I believe it could actually be more powerful than curcumin itself.

Ben:  Right. And by the way, we should back up here. That's one of the four parts in a grain of rice, right? You find it under the hole of the rice seed. It has all the minerals and nutrients that allow the rice to grow. It's like the storehouse of the actual rice grain. But like a stabilized rice bran, from what I understand, is they deactivate lipase, which is the enzyme in rice bran that would normally degrade it really quickly and make it rancid. Then when you stabilize it by deactivating that lipase enzyme, you get an actual shelf life that allows the rice bran that you consume not to become, say, rancid on the shelf in the same way you might mix a fish oil with some type of antioxidant like vitamin E, or astaxanthin, or something like that.

And so, then you get this stabilized rice bran. But I started to look into it after you told me about it, and oh my goodness, it's got like omega-3, omega-6, omega-9 fatty acids, soluble fiber, insoluble fiber, a ton of E complex vitamins, B complex vitamins, minerals, polyphenols, CoQ10, a bunch of stuff in it, but at a pretty low-calorie load, considering you can just like put a scoop of that stuff into your smoothie. It's actually pretty impressive. I don't think a lot of people have heard of like a stabilized rice bran before.

David:  Our CogniNurish formula has stabilized rice bran. Our new version has hydrolyzed rice bran. It's hydrolyzed with shiitake mushroom enzymes. Give you a little idea. Stabilized rice bran is about $12 a kilo. Wholesale is what we pay for it. The hydrolyzed rice bran is about $1,000 a kilo. It's 10 times the price, 8 times the price. So, the hydrolyzed rice bran comes from a company at Daiwa Health in Japan. They farm this thing and it's got no pesticides, no heavy metals, very clean. And if you think of the rice bran, if you guys ever ate a pistachio or a sunflower, that little flake around it's the embryo. That has over 450 documented.

Elizabeth Ryan at the University of Colorado, Fort Collins, she's received $5, $6, $7 million a year from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for years to research rice bran. She's been bringing children that are malnourished in Africa alive with 30, 35 grams of rice bran. All rice starts out as brown, and then what they do is they use a friction, they shake the rice, and they take the bran off and throw the bran away. That bran, within 24 hours, spoils. It rots really quick. Even the pigs won't eat it. So, what they do is they hydrolyze it or stabilize it. They stabilize it with either heat, ethanol, some type of extraction. And the Japanese, what they do for 30 years, they've been stabilizing it. They actually hydrolyze it with shiitake mushroom enzymes. They take it. And that's why it's so expensive because those shiitake mushroom enzymes are expensive. And they take it through an amazing process. And the way it's delivered is amazing.

So, we've studied their stabilized rice bran. We saw how great it was in treating people with Alzheimer's, dementia, treating people with HIV. And it's just amazing some of the work that was done with both rice brans at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. So, we decided to take those two key molecules out of the powder, and we put them with the curcumin together. So, we have curcumin pro. One has the hydrolyzed rice bran, the other one has the aloe vera. Depending on the condition that you have, the chronic condition you have, we recommend one or the other, or you mix both of them. If you're super, super sick and you have a real chronic disease, that's going to end your life. You may want to try both, like 12 to 16 drops of each, so which would be 24 to 36. Yesterday, I gave it to an amazing guy who's sick. He was obese and I gave him 48 drops of each three times a day. And within an hour, he was walking up and down the stairs, which was exciting because he couldn't walk up and down the stairs for months.

The polysaccharides are amazing. These are powerful immunomodulators. So, the rice bran is a very powerful immunomodulator, but there's all these phytonutrients, vitamins, cofactors, minerals. Like you said, if you look at their research paper on our website in our library at Nurish.Me, you'll see our library, there's a paper for Elizabeth Ryan [01:12:40] _____. It talks about rice bran. She is killing it. She educated me. I spent three hours on the phone with her one day. I wanted to bring her on board full-time. She's so amazing. She's an amazing human being. If you want to get well, whatever disease you have, I don't care what you're facing–our chief medical officer had fibromyalgia rheumatica. After two weeks on this product, change his life. He's off of prednisone. James Ruffin (ph) here, a big attorney at The Cochran Law Firm, he had severe sinusitis and he had severe ACL issues with both of his knees. Two weeks, he's off of prednisone. He was on prednisone for nine years.

Ben:  And that was with the CogniNurish, or he was combining the–he was like stacking the CogniNurish with the CoreCumin?

David:  James was just doing the two CogniNurish Pros with the rice bran and aloe vera. He was not taking CogniNurish, James.

Ben:  Okay.

David:  Steve, our chief medical officer was taking–first, he started out just with CogniNurish, and then he added that. But they both work pretty powerful. So, what we've done is the bioavailability on powers is not as high, right? It's like 5% to 10%. So, that's why every supplement you buy out there, including the ones you sell, Ben, at Kion, which are very clean, they're beautiful supplements, but they're micronized, they're microsized, right? So, the difference between a microsized tablet capsule powder and a macromolecular complex, which is a micelle and a liposome is 1,000 times greater. So, we're a thousand times smaller than most capsules or pills, and even our own powder. We're transitioning from the powder to the liquid for one reason because our ability to take all the molecules in the powder, we're now able to take all those molecules, including some of the sea buckthorn berry and some of the other new things that I've showed you. We've taken them all. We've encapsulated them. So, we've done over 21 molecules into this macromolecular complex and the bioavailability. So, instead of using 100 grams or 500 grams of rice bran, we could do it with–if you saw how much rice bran we're using, we're using 18 milligrams of rice bran per serving. All of our clinical trials at University of Miami was with 500 to 1,000 milligrams.

Ben:  And it's still like a powdered scoop that you would use, that I could still put it in like a smoothie?

David:  Well, we are still going to continue with the powder in the future. But right now in the CoreCumin, it's liquid. So, you can have it both ways. You can have it in a powder or the liquid.

Ben:  Okay. So, you take your CoreCumin–okay. So, on your website, you could go there and you can get CoreCumin that has the hydrolyzed rice bran in it. Or if you wanted this powder for your smoothie that has like the sunflower lecithin, and the aloe, and everything else in there, you could get that, and that's more of like the one you would add to the smoothie rather than putting the liquid drops in your mouth. So, that's why you hydrolyze it because you can just do a few drops of the liquid when you're taking the curcumin at the same time?

David:  You got it. They're different rice brans. And the current version right now, we have stabilized rice bran. It's a different vendor. It comes from a very good vendor. It's very good, but the hydrolyzed rice bran, 10 times the price, we get that from Japan. We import that from Japan. And the company, they also sit on our advisory board, the general manager of Daiwa. Amazing company. They have over 50 clinical trials that they've done on the rice bran, if you go to the Daiwa Health website. It's a very, very powerful molecule. Love the company, love the people. And we're just honored to be able to be one of the only–they've only licensed this to one other–it's ourselves in them. So, we use it for joint pain, and they've been using it to treat other chronic health diseases to improve quality of life, and they're just an amazing product. And everybody that's taken the product, we brought people back to life with this product. So, it's amazing.

Ben:  Wow. Well, I know we're getting slightly long in the tooth, but I also wanted to ask you because you're kind of plugged into a lot of these cool up-and-coming ingredients in the nutrition sector, which is why I loved geeking out with you when we were in San Diego. But I wanted to ask you if there's any other crazy or cool ingredients or superfoods that you've discovered lately, or that you're interested in that you could just throw out their rapid-fire that you think would be things people may not have heard of before, or that you're currently using in your own protocol that you think are pretty cool.

David:  Well, one of the new ones that you'll see in our new coming up versions in the next quarter or two quarters, you'll see–a lot of people don't know about omega-7. So, you've heard of 3, 6, 9, but there's a product called sea buckthorn berry. And we'll be launching it, a woman's health product. I gave you some samples of that. It was real tart, but it's 10 times more powerful than acai berry. It's got more than 190 bioactives in there. It's got 18 amino acids, it's got omega-3, 6, 7, and it also has a lot of antioxidants, 14 minerals, 17 vitamins.

Ben:  Yeah. That's a palmitoleic acid, the omega-7s. You don't get a lot of those in fish oil. Very, very small amounts. But sea buckthorn, it's so funny, I discovered that at like a farmer's market in Finland, and I bought a bunch. And then, I went to another event when I was in Finland and they were making like cocktails, these bright orange cocktails with the sea buckthorn through. And it's tough to get, but you gave me a little powdered packet of it that I took on the plane with me, I mixed in my water bottle. This stuff's amazing, and it tastes wonderful, but it's kind of like orange juice on steroids times 10 in terms of a lot of the bioactive components. But particularly the fatty acids, that omega-7 fatty acid complex in it is really profound. I think it's a great ingredient and it's really pretty, too, that kind of dark orange-ish–I guess like a very, very dark rich orange.

David:  I love it. But it's 70 times stronger than vitamin C, 70 times.

Ben:  Yeah.

David:  It's got vitamin C in it, but the antioxidant ability on the ORAC scale, it's almost 900,000, 900,000 per 100 grams, which is–

Ben:  And you guys are going to start selling that one at Nurish, like that will be available as a powder that people could order, or you can do it as a liquid?

David:  Both. It'll be available both ways.

Ben:  Oh, wow. Cool. I like the powder. I thought that was really great. I haven't tried the liquid before, but–

David:  The powder is great because you could throw it in your smoothie. I take the powder. I do two tables–one of these jars, these jars come half-filled because it's so expensive. So, we want to make sure people like it. If you're sick, you need two jars a month. If you're not sick, just one jar a month. But it's just a tub, basically, and it's on the website. It's $77 on our website. It's very inexpensive. It used to be 150. We cut the price in half. Our new version with the sea buckthorn berry, we're going to be adding some really cool things in the new version. You guys are going to love it. But the CogniNurish Pro, that's going to be coming out. I can give you guys a little teaser if you want on what's going to come out with it, but it's really, really exciting what we're doing with some of the new products at Nurish.Me.

Ben:  Yeah.

David:  We really love to be able to nourish you guys.

Ben:  I'll give you a fun fact, David, as we're wrapping up here. Both turmeric, as well as sea buckthorn has some pretty cool hepatoprotective properties for the liver. And one of my buddies include me into this, and so I tried it. Like if you can get some turmeric root, you can powder it up and put it into a vodka, like a bottle of vodka, and make like a turmeric-infused vodka that you can then use in any cocktail the same way that you would normally use vodka. But of course, you're getting some of those hepatoprotective properties at the same time that you're drinking. And so, what I want to do with this sea buckthorn, if I get my hands on more powder, is I want to do like a sea buckthorn vodka that I can use for making cocktails. And I think it'll be like a beautiful bright orange color to show my dinner guests and pour them a little cocktail over ice. I usually mix that up with little soda water, or tonic water, or some other superfood beverage, or even like a can of Zevia, which is what I like to add vodka to. And so, this could, in disguise, be a cocktail ingredient as well.

David:  I'm going to send you a bunch of packets that will take care of you for the next six months. Don't worry about, okay?

Ben:  Send me some vodka, too. And some hangover pills just in case.

David:  You know I don't drink alcohol. So, listen to this. The new CogniNurish Pro and some of the new formulations we have, we're putting the CyanthOx, which is the sea berry fruit powder choline. We have in there ginkgo biloba. We have frankincense, B9, B12, obviously, which we're using, Adenosylcobalamin, and vitamin D3, as well as vitamin E. And then, we have vitamin K1 and zinc that we're putting in there. That's on top of the golden flax seed powder, which is in there now. So, we have black seed powder now, sunflower lecithin, dioscorea, which is wild yam powder, organic by aloe, which is the inner leaf aloe vera powder, which has the highest [01:22:02] _____ known to mankind.

There's another reason why we continue to sell the powder. And everybody says, “Why are you still selling the powder?” This powder has calcium and silica [01:22:13] _____. I can't encapsulate that. It's only available in a powder. It's the only kosher of clay approved by the World Health Organization. That clay basically absorbs and chelates you. It takes all the alpha-toxins, neurotoxins out of your system. And every day as you take it, you poop out all your heavy metals, your mercury, your cadmium, your lead, all that crap. If you have tattoos, you're full of that stuff. Both products will chelate you if you have tattoos. So, that's in the product, as well as an inositol hexaphosphate, IP6.

Ben:  Wow.

David:  So, that's the base formulation, and we have some new stuff. It's really exciting, and that'll be available online through a lot of healthcare professionals as well. And hopefully, you'll be able to buy this on Kion one day.

Ben:  Yeah. And you could take it to space, if you can get through Richard's TSA.

David:  Yeah, exactly. But look, at Nurish.Me, you could find all the data you want. I highly recommend people, just try it. And we have a special promo for the listeners on Ben's podcast today, and we'd love to have Ben tell you how you can get yours and get a beautiful discount, and be a customer. We'd love to have you. And DM me. I'm on Instagram, david.is.grateful, David is grateful, on Instagram. And you can go to Nurish.Me on our social media. So, we'd love to hear from people who have tried the product in the past and people who want to try it. Any questions, let me know. Ben, we know how well this works. You even had Paul Chek. Check it out. And I gave some to Drew Canole. He's been taking it now, and may.

So, we have a lot of people in the biohacking community that have been taking the product. They love it. It's doing a lot of things for their suffering, because we all have pain, because we work out hard. But for pain relief and reducing inflammation, I believe there's nothing better out there than this product on the market. Stop taking all those toxic ibuprofen, acetaminophen, all that stuff that's really damaging your kidneys, your liver, your pancreas. Fifty thousand people a year die of Tylenol every year. Hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people that have all sorts of side effects to Advil and all sorts of gastric because this helps with your digestion, too. So, you don't need to take any of these toxic medicine that helps you with indigestion and acid reflux, whatever you call that, I don't know. I've never had any digestive issues in my life, so I'm very fortunate.

And we know this, that everybody that's taking the product, nobody's had the flu or the cold in a couple years for our regular customers. So, you can prevent because curcumin is antimicrobial, it's antiviral, it's antioxidant, it's anti-cancer, anti-tumor. This is clinically proven. Don't take it from me, just go do your research on PubMed as the bible. I've read over 4,000 PubMed articles, including every single human clinical trial. I've read every single one over the past four years, and I can tell you without a doubt that I've seen miracles happen in these clinical trials. And it's anybody's curcumin or turmeric. It's not just ours, it's anybody's you could take. Just make it part of your daily diet. And if you want something that's more bioavailable, something that works a little faster, that's ours, you know.

Ben:  Yeah.

David:  And it's about price the same. For $55, you get a two-month supply of our regular one, for 55 bucks now.

Ben:  Awesome.

David:  Think about that. That's 15 cents a day.

Ben:  Yeah.

David:  I mean, it's not much.

Ben:  I dig it, I dig it. And I know we're running out of time. So, what I'm going to do is I'll just assemble some codes for you. I think it's code BEN25 will save you 25% on any of David's products at Nurish.Me. It's N-U-R-I-S-H.M-E. But what I'll also do is I'll link to like Space Billionaires, and that article on curcumin, and some different papers I've got on turmeric, and sea buckthorn, and everything else that David and I talk about. What I'll do is I'll link to all that, and also his Instagram account, so you guys don't have to remember any of this stuff, if you just go to BenGreenfieldFitness.com/perez, P-E-R-E-Z, BenGreenfieldFitness.com/p-e-r-e-z. That's where the shownotes will live for today's show with David. And you can also leave your comments, your questions, your feedback there. Hit up David or I with any of your thoughts and we'll be happy to jump in and reply to you.

    Good morning Ben
It has been along time since I listen to this podcast, and at that time i did by the NurishMe corecumin , today many years ago I am searching for this product for my sister that was diagnosed with breast cancer, I gave her a couple of this curcumin and she said it has worked for her like nothing else , I have been looking where to purchase but all effort has not render any success. Would you be able to find a source were to purchase.
I suspect that maybe it could be discontinued.
Would there be a chance you could contact David Perez and find out if this product still available and where?
I think you are a very busy person and this email may never receive an answer but if it does reach you I would be forever grateful you took the time to respond.
    Thank you, God bless

    Violet

Ben, I love you so much, love your podcast and everything you do. Just wanted to say, though, that the clicks of your mouse during the podcasts are so annoying! Hope you can get that sorted out. =D
