“…Back when I was a bodybuilder, it was common knowledge that one of the best ways to get a nice body – especially if the goal was the ultimate combination of lean muscle mass and low body fat – was to do a “bulking” phase of muscle gain, followed by a “stripping” or “cutting” phase of fat loss leading up to the show (in which one basically poses on stage in scant clothing while performing a highly entertaining “flex-off” against fellow competitors).

But new exercise science research suggests that my approach (and the approach of many other professional fitness enthusiasts and workout “gurus”) could be flawed when it comes to building muscle and losing fat.     I’d love to read/hear something on picking your nutrition battles.

    We’ve all heard so many different things about the evils of GMO’s and then when we run to the Organics, we hear about pesticides that are natural, but nasty for consumption.

    We read about nutrition is best absorbed through food, but then we hear about how our foods no longer have the nutrition that they used to have and we should take supplements.

    Obviously, we would drive ourselves crazy trying to do every possible thing being as mindful about our health as we can be.

    There’s been mention of the trade-off between performance and longevity. I have no idea if it can be done in one or even many podcasts – but I’d like to know which battles to fight.

    Do I opt to save more money and buy GMO’s, and eat a diet for longevity? Or, do I go the organic route, take my chances with the natural pesticides and diet for performance – since I won’t live as long, I won’t need as much money in the long run anyway, right?

    And given all the evidence of how stress can eliminate all the benefits of your diet and exercise – why not just take a moderate approach? Play sports you like with friends, eat what you want as long as it’s not processed and let the chips fall where they may.

    Ben – your way of problem solving can probably break this down into multiple parts. Yet, I’m pretty sure most of this has been covered in your podcasts before.
