New Discoveries Of The Week: Cool New Things I'm Trying, Books I'm Reading, And More!

The Ants Go Marching One By One…Into My Mouth

When you think about powerful animals, I'm betting ants aren't top of mind (rather, lions, tigers, and bears, oh my?).

But the mighty ant can carry up to 20x its own body weight on its back. That's like the equivalent of me being able to lug more than 3,000 pounds. And while that is never going to happen, I've found a super cool way to hack into the incredible power of this strapping insect.

Years ago I learned about Black Ant Powder from Lost Empire Herbs and I'm still hooked on it. In fact, back then—in 2018—I mentioned it on this Joe Rogan Experience podcast episode and as a result there was a huge demand for the stuff. (I also talked about it during this Q&A podcast if you want to hear more.) It's an all-natural energy herb that's packed with amino acids, minerals, beneficial fatty acids, and even nootropics. I use the ant powder pre-workout as its also a potent strengthener for the musculoskeletal system.

Great, you may be thinking, I'll save a few bucks and send my kid ant-hunting in the backyard.

Unfortunately, you won't get the same results with backyard ants (though you may still want to send your kid out…it will keep him or her occupied for a while at least). The stuff I use is made from a specific variety of ant, the Polyrachis Ant, which live up high in the mountains, often among ginseng roots. Polyrachis Ants are sourced from a pure and clean environment, while common household ants are often exposed to chemicals that I do not recommend you ingest. The Polyrachis Ant Extract from Lost Empire Herbs is also, 10:1 meaning you get 10 times the ant power per teaspoon.

If the thought of taking a straight dropperful of ants is less than appealing, you can add it right into your protein powder (I recommend Kion Clean Protein in the chocolate flavor for ant-mixing) or try this Black Ant Frappe recipe I created:

Blend and drink up!

However you decide to get your ant power, you'll definitely reap the benefits, with the added bonus of being able to enjoy people's reactions when you tell them your muscle-building, energy-enhancing insect secret.

Bear With Me, It's Dinnertime

Okay, so we have established that ants are stronger than bears. No contest. But there's also no doubt that bears are pretty bad-ass. Until recently, though, when a fellow bowhunter friend gifted me a giant bear steak, I had never tried to prepare bear to eat.

Bear meat is very tough, so it needs to be cooked low and slow. It also needs to be cooked to at least 165°F or more to avoid getting Trichinosis (a nasty parasite).

So, here's how I prepared the cuts of bear:

This bear meat turned out to be incredibly tender when cut against the grain, which is a trick for working with tougher meat cuts.

If you ever get your hands on a nice slab of bear meat, you have to try this recipe, and like I advised with the ant extract, don't hold back on telling your friends and family—they'll probably think you're kind of crazy, which is half the fun of biohacking, right?

I Want To Know What You've Got Cooking

I'm so stoked about the positive feedback I've been getting about my new Boundless Cookbook. The cookbook was a labor of love, but I'm really proud of the end result (especially considering I'm definitely not a trained chef).

Now that the Boundless Cookbook is available on Amazon, I have a favor to ask…

If you have the cookbook and you love it, can you hop on over to Amazon and leave a review? Amazon reviews—as I bet you know—are super important. I want your honest feedback and I'll be reading them to hear what you think.

You can leave your review on Amazon right here (and if you don't have a cookbook yet, and you're an Amazon Prime member, you could have your copy at your doorstep as early as tomorrow).

  1. Scott says:

I would love a follow up to your coronary calcium score. I also had a score in a similar range as you. 40 y/o health conscious make like yourself.

  2. Han says:

Where did you get 165F as a safe temperature? Probably a cookbook.

The risk of prion diseases, vector-borne diseases, and so forth is very high. Autoclave sterilization at 249F only kills most pathogens, not all.

Since oxidation occurs over 300F, use 290F for 2-3 hours or until tender.

This has nothing to do with bear meat in particular. Bear should be safer than commercial meat. The CAFO raised chicken is probably the highest ARG risk around, that’s why we don’t eat it.

    1. Nic says:

You seriously cook your meat at 290 for 2-3 hours…? If it were that serious, more people would fall to prior diseases. Far more likely to die from a bad fall.
