New Discoveries
The Results Are In… *This* Type of Heat Therapy Is the Best for Your Heart, Immune System & Thermoregulation
If you’ve ever wondered whether an infrared sauna, a dry sauna, or a hot tub delivers the greatest cardiovascular and immune “bang for your buck,” the latest research finally has an answer…
And it’s not what you might expect.
In this head-to-head trial, researchers compared:
- Hot water immersion: 45 min at 104.9°F
- Traditional dry sauna: 3 × 10 min at 176°F (with 5-min cool-downs)
- Infrared sauna: 45 min at 113–149°F
The winner, by a landslide, was hot water immersion. Compared to both sauna modalities, hot water immersion:
- Raised core temperature nearly 3× higher
- Produced the largest spike in cardiac output
- Triggered significant increases in interleukin-6 (IL-6), natural killer (NK) cells, and CD8+ cytotoxic T-cells—creating a substantial immune-activation window
- Created the strongest thermoregulatory challenge (the key ingredient for long-term adaptation)
Infrared saw almost no rise in core temperature. The traditional sauna was solid, but still nowhere close to immersion.
But here's the thing…
Even though hot-water immersion “wins” on pure physiological strain, I’m still sticking primarily with sauna because:
- I like to stretch, breathe, and move during heat sessions.
- I’m not into finishing a session looking like a wrinkled raisin.
- Sauna lets me layer in breathwork, mobility work, and meditative practices that complement the heat.
To sum it up, for maximal heat stress and immune activation, hot water immersion wins. For practicality, habit-stacking, and recovery flow: sauna is still king.
