New (Fascinating) Findings on the Connection Between GLP-1 & Your Kidneys 💡🩺

If you’re into optimizing your metabolic health or just staying on top of the latest research, you need to know how GLP-1 impacts your kidneys. A recent review took a close look at how the incretin hormone GLP-1 and related therapies (like GLP-1 receptor agonists and DPP-4 inhibitors) do more than just lower blood sugar—they actually affect kidney function too.

GLP-1 and GIP (gut hormones) are known for their role in insulin secretion and glucose metabolism. But based on recent research, we now know these hormones also influence fluid and electrolyte balance—not just through insulin modulation but directly via the kidneys and gastrointestinal tract.

It turns out that GLP-1 receptor agonists and DPP-4 inhibitors may increase natriuresis (sodium excretion through urine) and even improve renal blood flow in people with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). What's really intriguing is that the renal benefits of GLP-1 might extend beyond just blood sugar control—these therapies could help reduce renal risk, even in those with diabetes-related kidney issues.
