Celebrate Earth Day 2023 with Ben Greenfield's Earth Day Guide

Earth Day is an annual celebration that takes place on April 22nd.

First celebrated in 1970, it's a time when people around the world come together to celebrate our planet and raise awareness about the importance of protecting it for future generations. Since its origin, the movement has grown and evolved, and today Earth Day is a global event that brings together people from all walks of life.

For me, as a Christian, Earth Day isn't about some kind of pantheistic worship of nature, but rather, a perfect example of an opportunity to follow God’s first commandment to the man and woman He had created, spelled out in Genesis 1:28:

“And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.”

This means that gratitude, love and responsible stewardship of our planet is something that we should all love to engage in, and something that makes God smile and honors the Creator of it all!

The health and wellness movement is inherently linked to Earth Day as both are focused on promoting a healthy and sustainable lifestyle. Those who prioritize their health are often aware of the impact their environment plays on their well-being, and thus they have a deep respect and awe for our planet. Health and wellness advocates have long recognized the intimate connection between nature and human well-being. Spending time in natural environments has been shown to have numerous physical and mental health benefits, including reducing stress, improving mood, and boosting immune function. For this reason, many who seek a healthy lifestyle tend to prioritize spending time in nature as a crucial aspect of their self-care routines. Whether it's hiking through a forest, practicing yoga on the beach, or simply taking a walk in the park, being in nature provides a sense of peace and rejuvenation that is difficult to find elsewhere, and for me personally, is a wonderful and grounding moment to be in full awe and gratitude for God's Creation, and to speak to God and experience Him through nature.

Grounding, growing our own food, and Earth Day are also interconnected in their focus on nurturing a relationship with the natural world as responsible stewards.

Grounding, or the practice of physically connecting with the Earth's surface, is said to have numerous health benefits, including reducing inflammation and stress. By practicing grounding, we deepen our connection with the Earth and become more mindful of our impact on the environment. Grounding can also help us feel more centered and calm, which can inspire us to take action to protect our planet. When we grow our own food, we become more aware of the natural processes that sustain life, such as the importance of healthy soil, clean water, and fresh air.

We can also reduce our carbon footprint by growing our own food, as we eliminate the need for transportation and packaging of produce from far-off places. Furthermore, growing our own food allows us to appreciate the seasonal rhythms of nature, and savor the delicious flavors of fresh, locally-grown produce. By embracing a more sustainable and Earth-friendly lifestyle through growing our own food, we can contribute to a healthier planet and a brighter future for all living beings. When we grow our own food, we not only have access to fresh, nutritious produce but we also develop a deeper appreciation for the earth's ability to sustain us.

Earth Day is a reminder of our collective responsibility to protect and preserve the planet we call home. By grounding ourselves, growing our own food, and celebrating Earth Day, we can cultivate a greater sense of connection with nature and take steps toward building a more sustainable future.

4. Rhizal

Another one of my favorite minimalist shoe options supporting our electrical groundedness to the Earth is Rhizal. Like Earth Runners, Rhizal’s shoes have a copper plug on the bottom of the sole, allowing you to be in tune with the Earth and its electrical neutrality. With a unique and simple design, their shoes allow innate foot movement with a thin, flexible sole and wide toebox. This means you no longer need to squish your toes and ruin the strength of your feet with arch support.

In addition to their impressive level of excellence, Rhizal also believes in using natural materials, such as leather, as opposed to petroleum-based plastics. This benefits our planet as well as your body immeasurably. Check out more of the benefits here!

So what does Rhizal stand for? The name is inspired by the mycorrhizal network: soil where trees communicate with each other through their roots. Myco translates to fungi, while rhizal means roots. Rhizal represents reconnection to the ground, to our Mother Earth. Ready to reconnect with your roots? Slip yourself into a pair of Rhizal shoes and get ready to tap into your primal existence with the added benefits of comfort and style!

So how sustainable is your adornment? To be truly sustainable, your clothing must be good for your health and for the health of the Earth too. Here are a few tips for you, and if you'd like to get into the nitty-gritty details of these tips, then please go explore a fantastic article here written by my friend and wellness expert Mark Sisson.

-Don’t wear snug fitting polyester underwear, which is basically like feeding your skin and genitals a steady diet of plastics (in fact, tight clothing in general is not that great for lymph or blood flow).

-Limit or eliminate print tees (printed graphics on fabrics are the primary source of dermal exposure to harmful chemicals like benzothiazole).

-Limit water-resistant or stain-resistant clothing, which are notorious sources of the “forever chemicals” linked to fertility issues, hormonal changes, and chronic health conditions.

-Limit wrinkle-free clothing, which is usually dosed with formaldehyde.

-Buy your leggings and yoga pants carefully because many popular legging brands also contain forever chemicals.

-Focus on quality over quantity by investing in healthier, sustainable fabrics that last longer, such as organic cotton, wool, linen and tencel.

-Consider visiting thrift stores to shop for well-worn natural sustainable fabric clothing that’s had time to leach out most of its chemical load.

My New #1 Hack For Zapping Inflammation, Increasing Deep Sleep & Recovering Faster—Earthing (The Most Important Health Discovery Ever?)

Grounding connects you to the often-overlooked natural energy that nurtures and balances your body at the deepest levels, draining it of inflammation, pain, stress, and fatigue. Physically grounding the human body to the Earth normalizes the functioning of all of its systems—the body utilizes the Earth's electrical potential and free electrons to maintain its internal electrical stability, normalizing its self-regulating and self-healing mechanisms. Learn about the planet's impactful, unique, and overlooked natural healing energy and how you can readily connect to it in my featured podcast with Clint Ober here.

Are Christians Destroying The Environment? A Biblical Approach to Environmentalism and the “Dominion Mandate.”

Let's face it: Christians don't seem to be very good environmentalists. We have been shockingly bad at using our Bibles and our brains when it comes to conservation and the environment. Unhinged environmentalism is not the answer, but neither is ignorance and apathy. It's time for something different, and my guest on this podcast, Dr. Gordon Wilson, feels that Christian responsibility for the natural world goes back to the very beginning, when God commanded us to “fill the earth and subdue it.” This so-called “Dominion Mandate” is an authoritative alternative to both environmental activists and to those who think “conservation” is a word progressives made up. What A Christian-Libertarian-Environmentalist-Capitalist-Lunatic-Farmer Can Teach You About How To Eat, How To Shop & How To Think About The Way We Farm & Feed The World.

Check out the inspiring story of Joel Salatin, an American farmer who raises livestock using holistic methods of animal husbandry on his Polyface Farm in Virginia. His high-quality “beyond organic” meats are sold through direct marketing to consumers and restaurants. But farming is more than a business for Salatin, it's a ministry. In his new book, “The Marvelous Pigness of Pigs,” he shares his deep faith and respect for all of God's creation. Learn how he combines his Christian libertarian beliefs with ecological family farming and finds inspiration to honor and care for the Earth.

Thank you for taking the time to explore my Earth Day Guide.

At its core, Earth Day is a celebration of our planet and a reminder of our responsibility to cherish and protect it. This year we wanted to highlight a different aspect of our relationship with nature: our connection to it. Nature has an incredible power to inspire and uplift us. It can ground us, rejuvenate us, and fill us with a sense of awe and wonder. Whether it's a hike through the mountains, a stroll along the beach, or simply spending time in a garden, being in nature can be a transformative experience. Hopefully, these resources will help you connect with nature in a deeper and more meaningful way. From grounding products to hydroponic produce growing systems to EMF-shielding devices, in 2023 we are truly blessed to have such amazing companies aiming to make the world a healthier place for future generations. Let's continue to cultivate our connection to nature and work together to create a healthier, more sustainable planet for all.
