When it comes to healing your gut, getting rid of bloat and constipation, changing your gastrointestinal bacteria or any other digestive topic, I consider Dr. Robynne Chutkan to be one of the smartest women on the face of planet.
She is on faculty at Georgetown University and founder of the Digestive Center for Women, and she is author of not one, not two, but three books that focus on her primary philosophy: healing your body from the inside out.
So basically, she really loves talking about poop.
Her latest book, The Microbiome Solution, is a deep dive into how and why some of our modern day living is actually causing more problems than we realized to the tiny microbes that keep us happy and healthy– household cleaners, air conditioning, processed food. In that book, she talks about eating poop, timing your probiotics, getting a dog to lick your face, eating dirt and more.
In her other book, The Bloat Cure, she looks at less of the science and more at the practical nature of our bloated bellies, talking about how bloat isn’t just bad Chinese food, but also things like codeine in cough syrup and dehydration and birth control pills and GMOs.

Dr. Chutkan you mention taking a good probiotic with the correct ratios of bacteria. Is there a particular brand that you use and/or recommend?

The opportunity for adolescent humor was there, like low-hanging fruit. Somehow, the good doctor, nor Ben made too much of it. I have no idea how they resisted.
Fortunately, (or not) I have no questions about this material.
This was a great podcast and I’ll certainly look at reading both of her books in the next few months. She’s interesting, knowledgeable and engaging. Unlike a recent podcast guest who opines on excess fiber (Dr. K) she’s also not a conspiracy theorist and appears to take a moderated approach which is refreshing.

there was an episode on NPR just this morning saying the studies, so far, show the hookworm/whipworm therapies to be ineffective, at best.

Hi Ben, have you ever heard of the estrogenic effect of topical use of lavender & tea tree oil? What’s your take on it? I’m quite sure that using tea tree oil topically (already diluted) gave me man boobs/puffy nipple. Any idea how to reverse that (beside stop using it, which I’ve already done)?
Ben I think you should win some kind of internet award for the best post/podcast titles… but this time you have really outdone yourself. As soon as I can stop laughing I’ll listen to this podcast, it sounds really interesting. REALLY. I love that you talk about things, and interview people about things that most other people don’t.
What is the protocol you followed for the supplement stack? Just follow the recommendations they suggest or different for before & after??
Follow the exact recommendations that they recommend. That is what I do.
In the Abstract they state HMB-FA (3 g) and ATP (400 mg) – do you take that 20-30mins prior to training with EAA/creatine?

Hi Ben,
Great podcast as usual. On the HMB-ATP stack does that go well with other supplements? I’m not a huge ‘supplementer’, but I do try to follow your advice and take daily creatine, Amino (EAA), fish oil and a multi. If I buy and take HMB-ATP, do I replace the Amino? I take one 1000mg amino usually per day. I do Triathlon so pretty heavy training load.

I’m wondering what her thoughts of Triphala is, and the effectiveness in easing symptoms of Ucolitis/Crohns disease? I’ve been dealing with Ulcerative Colitis for over 6 years now and got to a point where I thought cured it completely then all of a sudden I get full blown symptoms again and feeling even worse… weak, joint pains, fatigued, emotionless, along with the other unpleasant intestinal side effects. I want to visit her digestive center for women but I live in WA state. Can she recommend any centers near Tri-cities, WA ?

Hi Kayla, My name is Kerri Affronti, you are welcome to friend me on Facebook. I have had UC for 5 yrs now and I am currently in the UK undergoing FMT’s. Please google them for a definition if you have not heard of these miraculous treatments yet. I am on day 4 of a ten day micro-biome transplant process and after talking to the amazing staff at Taymount Clinic and all the patients here, I am certain this is the best we (humans) have found for treating our gut bacteria. Repopulating lost bacteria colonies, etc. In a healthy, holitistc manner. Unfortunately this procedure is not currently available in the USA although, I and a few other of my colleagues are pushing for it to be in the next few years.
