Transform Beef Heart into a *Delicious, HEART-HEALTHY Superfood* with My Bourbon Braised Recipe 🫀🥃
Ever wondered how to turn an often-overlooked cut of meat into a flavorful, nutrient-rich powerhouse?
Beef heart is full of essential nutrients such as iron, zinc, and coenzyme Q10 (you can discover more about the benefits of CoQ10 here), which play crucial roles in maintaining heart health. Iron is vital for oxygen transport in the blood, zinc supports immune function and enzyme activity, and CoQ10 acts as an antioxidant, aiding in energy production and protecting cells from damage. Together, these nutrients make beef heart a superfood for your own heart—and now I'm sharing how to make it taste GREAT, too.
For this recipe, which I crafted in my own kitchen, I took a 100% grass-fed beef heart from US Wellness Meats (use code BEN to save 15% off your order) and decided to give it some tender loving care (ha!), resulting in a delicious makeover: my “Bourbon Braised Beef Heart” recipe. This dish not only highlights the beef heart’s rich, robust flavors but also makes the most of its incredible health benefits.
Here’s how you can whip up this mouthwatering meal:
- Tenderize the heart in kefir or buttermilk for 24 hours.
- Rinse the heart, chop it into cubes, then brown on all sides for about 4–6 minutes in a Dutch pot or other slow-cooking pot (I love the toxin-free cookware from Our Place — you can use code BEN to save 10% off). I suggest browning in butter, ghee, coconut oil, lard, tallow, or (my favorite) bacon fat.
- Remove the beef heart and set aside. Sauté carrots, onions, and celery until caramelized, then add salt, pepper, cayenne, garlic, onion powder, and spices such as bay leaves.
- Put the heart back into the pot, reduce the heat, and simmer with bourbon, wine, and apple cider vinegar for 4–5 hours.
- Remove from heat, allow to cool, discard bay leaves, then serve, preferably with sourdough bread for dipping (the bread recipe and plenty more of my favorite recipes can be found in Boundless Kitchen and Boundless Cookbook).
