Should You Eat Carbs In The Morning Or The Evening?…51:45
Charlie asks: I'm a competitive distance runner and I typically train in a fasted state first thing in the morning. I consume a post-workout meal usually within 30 minutes of finishing my run, which is in line with what you've recommended in the past. But I think I may depart from your advice just a bit by including carbs in my morning meal. I've experimented with putting off carb consumption until the evening, and my energy levels throughout the day haven't been to my satisfaction. While my main focus is performance, I was hoping to hear your thoughts on what tradeoffs from a health and longevity standpoint I might be facing by introducing carbs early in the day. Do you have any thoughts on how I might modify my routine?
In my response, I recommend:

Do you have a link to the Rape / oxytocin nasal Zen powder you mentioned in the show?
Hi Ben. I like to do my strength training workouts in the morning because that’s when I feel freshest and I enjoy starting my day with that workout. If I’ve fasted for at least 12 hours before that workout (i.e., overnight, other than amino acids taken about 1/2 hour before the workout), what are your recommendations for when to get a first serving of carbs? Is there harm per se in delaying carbs until later in the day if you can manage it? And if you do recommend carbs closer to that workout, how would you recommend planning the carbs for the day (e.g., during that first meal and then the rest in the last meal, carbs evenly split throughout the day, etc.)?

Thanks. That podcast reference was helpful. One follow-up on that discussion—when you refer to the “if you’re working out again within the next 8 hours,” what is considered “working out”—another hard workout, something as simple as taking a walk, playing basketball?
Great show man, im a believer in what you teach, I need free stuff hook me up plz !!!!!!!!!
Hey Ben! When you are making fun of Beyond Meat, please just remember the people who spent their whole lives eating too much meat and crappy food that can no longer enjoy a “real burger” because of heart health or disease. They can now enjoy Beyond Meat and Impossible Burger and no longer feel deprived. I think that is a huge win for people who wouldn’t otherwise change their diet JUST because they may die sooner rather than later.
Thanks!
You Da Man Ben!
Question: can you recommend guided video or YouTube channel the shows programs or/and example ls of Complex Workout Routines.
Thanks in advance.
There are tons of videos on YouTube you could search for. I haven't had a chance to personally audit any of them because I typically do some variation of the example I gave on the show. I would start there, or check out the examples in my book https://BeyondTrainingBook.com
Hey Ben,
First, I’d like to thank you for all that you are doing. I’m a huge fan and you have inspired me to take control of me healthspan!! In regards to DNA testing, I’d like to hear your thoughts or if have you come across https://www.selfdecode.com/ by Joe Cohen? They are testing for 900,000 SNPs! He also runs a pretty informative/useful site called Selfhacked.com. Thanks again! I look forward to your response.
All the best,
Paul
Yes, I know Joe, he's been on the podcast a few times. You can listen to the episode on SelfDecode here: https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/podcast/self-qua…
But in the morning because of the overnight fast we are more insuline sensitive. Would this not be a better time to eat carbs?
Since also Testosterone is higher then. Thus testosterone plus carbs and proteins would seem more optimal, for building muscle too right?
Bonus question:
If our muscles repair at night wouldn’t loading up with proteins before sleep be better?
Thank you
No, because you can artificially induce insulin sensitivity via workouts, etc. later in day and the carbs with dinner can also enhance sleep, allowing you to stay in fat loss most of day, then refeed on carbs at end of day.
Hey Ben, you mentioned L-Tyrosine as a precursor to adrenaline. What other common supplements impact adrenaline? Thanks!
Hey Nick, this would be a good one to call into the podcast. https://speakpipe.com/BenGreenfield
Most excellent! Thank you, sir.
