Listener Q&A:
Rick asks: My girlfriend recently went the doctor. They took blood pressure and it was low (i don't know how low). The doctor recommended she increase her salt intake. Sounds reasonable I suppose, however I have a problem with how she recommended going about it. The doctor wants her eat high salt foods like patato chips to suppliment…does this sound right? There has to be a healthier way. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Bryan asks: I've been taking a basic Centrum multivitamin everyday.  Recently, I was at the store looking to buy something different and noticed that most of the main vitamin brands (Centrum, One a Day, etc.) have a “Performance” multivitamin.  Is there a benefit for someone who is actively training everyday to take a multivitamin that is enhanced for “active” individuals, or is it just hype? Secondly, will taking the multivitamin prior to working out make any difference on performance?

Chuck asks: 1) What is the difference between partially and fully hydrogenated oil?  I've actually heard that fully is not as bad?  I don't buy these products but I've seen the fully hydrogenated oils is products like generic peanut butter. 2) This Vitamin was recommended to me and I wanted to see your take on it: NSI Synergy Once Daily Multi-Vitamin Version 3.  Is it anything special worth buying versus a regular multivitamin from like GNC?  It has Quercetin in it which I know is supposed to have some positive benefits.

In my response to Bryan and Chuck, I mention Liquid Multi-Vitamins, including this Kid's Calm liquid (pictured right) that my kids take.

Jeanine has the following call-in question: I have noticed for a couple years now that my right leg, more specifically  my hip and hamstrings, are much weaker than those in my left. I have a hard  time doing single-leg anything on my right leg. What kind of medical  practitioner should I see to evaluate and fix this? An exercise physiologist? A kinesiologist? The article on muscle imbalances was interesting, but didn't give me enough info on how to help myself or where to get help.

Patrick asks: What are some good exercises or stretches to do on dry land to maintain swim form when you can't get to a pool? I just got a new tattoo and can't even look at an open body of water for another week.

Kenny asks: Training for my first ironman cda in 2011 and have a swim question. Is it ok to use the pull bouy for longer distance swims in the pool?  I find the pull bouy mimics the wetsuit in keeping my hips up.

toddhouston asks via Twitter: @bengreenfield How do you store your wetsuit for the winter? Inside out, or normal? In a bag or hanging? Thanks!

Ask Ben a Podcast Question

  1. alfiesaden says:

    sadensy

  2. BBD says:

I recently found your site and podcast and have been addicted to them as I have gotten a ton of great information from them.

My question is since 2009 I lost 90 pounds while training for triathlons, going from 320 to 230. In 2010 I have been 230 all season, although I have tripled my training totals from the previous year. I think, but unsure, the reason I have not loss more weigh is because of a 7 tris and also being on a cycling team, my fueling all season evened out my work load. Now that the offseason starts soon for me, I want to lose the last 30 pounds, so far I plan on adding weight lifting, any other tips or suggestions for losing weight in the offseason?

    Thank you for your time
    Scott

    1. Pretty loaded question, Scott. I'd highly recommend you read my book "Holisitic Fueling for Ironman Triathletes", available from Amazon.

  3. Jeff Hoening says:

Wow this is incredibly complex. Ben thanks for going through this tesing and sharing the results so openly with us all. I wonder if all this testing just complicates your life and your overall approach to food and fueling. Personally, I'd avoid this testing because I'd get obsessive with the results. Is there a risk of TOO much data?

    1. Jeff, my fueling is pretty uncomplicated. I never count calories, never measure % of carbs/protein/fat and basically follow the spirit of the law – I eat higher protein, higher fat, good carbohydrates, and take my supplements. If you were to live with me for a week, I think you'd find that I think less about food "prep and measure" than most folks – but maybe that's just my personality.

      1. Jeff Hoening says:

Right. However, with these kinds of complex tests, the tendency for some (including notoriously obsessive multisport athletes) could be to obsess on the results and scores. I admire your fueling recommendations and have implemented much of your recommendations. Just wondering how you realistically look at these results without obsessing on it.
