Listener Q&A:
As compiled and read by Brock, the Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast “sidekick”.
Audio Question from Alexander @ 00:17:14
Has embraced the high fat diet, stopped eating wheat, lost weight, and gotten faster – thanks to Ben, the website and the podcast. He has now signed up for an Ironman and is looking for advice on where to start with his swim training.
~ In my response, I mention my top swim resources from SwimSmooth. You can also take a peek at the Swim Gear page at Pacific Fit.
Audio Question from Cathy @ 00:23:55
Cathy has taken “Calm” magnesium in the past and it helped for sleeping. She took it again recently and it gave her a stomach ache and knocked her out (even the day after). It was the “Calm” brand with calcium and potassium. She is wondering if it is the different type of magnesium (glycinate vs citrate and ascorbate) or the addition of the calcium and potassium.
~ In my response to Cathy, I mention transdermal magnesium and magnesium glycinate.
Audio Question from Debbie @ 00:034:32
I Debbie is wondering if cinnamon ceylon or cinnamon cassia is the best to use to increase insulin sensitivity and fat burning.
Audio Question from Glenn @ 00:38:38
Glenn wants to know if Omega 6 is a possible cause or contributor to inflammation. He has used a supplement that was a mix of 3, 6 and 9 in the past. He currently has some achilles tendinitis and when he switched to omega3 only, it felt better. Is now considering trying a 3, 6, 9 + plant sterol supplement but doesn't want to aggravate his inflammation.
~ In my response to Glenn, I mention a good source of cur cumin and lactoferrin: Capraflex.
Audio Question from Jason @ 00:46:54
He recently started the ketosis diet and on day 5 he woke up with a heart rate of 110bpm. He ate some carbs (candy) and it took care of it. He upped his carbs a bit but had the same issue on day 7. He is doing P90x and some bike riding. He did not workout the day before the high heart rate but he did have some vodka and soda.
~ In my response, I reference supplements that ease transition into Low Carb diet. I also recommend Natural Life Minerals.
Audio Question from Jennifer @ 00:52:15
She is wondering about returning to a workout schedule, after taking a break to deal with exercise induced amenorrhea – can you go back to your old schedule or will that just bring the issues back? She would like Ben to talk a little more about that “reset button”. She is also wondering if Ben has any books about marathon running along with the books he wrote on triathlon?
~ In the response to Jennifer, we talk about www.MarathonDominator.com.
Audio Question from Tim @ 00:58:57
Tim bought some Deep30 protein and noticed that it has 7 grams of sugar. He has been told that any positive effects of the protein would be negated by the sugar.
~ In is question, Tim mentions DEEP30.

====================================== ======================================
Ben, I see you recommend Ancient Minerals mag. oil. There are a few on Amazon from the same source for half the price, like LifePro. Do you think these are safe? Would help a ton to save a little money on all the supplements!
I'm actually not familiar with the product, though some have been known to dissolve the flakes into distilled water (an inferior result). Life-Flo however, is a subsidiary of the publicly traded 4 billion dollar company NBTY, which is owned by the Carlyle Group – NBTY makes most of the lousy supplements on the market. And, the Carlyle Group is a private equity firm whose majority portfolio is made up of investments in defense contractors.
Looks like "The Island Where People Forget to Die" is further proof of how irrational the Paleo people are about their diet in general and especially about their anti-legume stance. (The people on this island eat six times more beans than the average American–and a lot of chickpeas, and they only eat meat about five times a month.) Oh and, Ben, I heard you try to modify on a previous podcast Michael Pollan's advise: "Eat food, not too much, mostly plants." You said, "Eat food, not too much, mostly animals that eat plants." This NY Times article seems to lend more credibility to Pollan.
Yep, I agree Richard.
quick follow up on jason's ketosis question- i thought you basically had to be eating nearly 0 carbs for an extended period to enter ketosis. who long would you have to go without carbs to be in ketosis? if you are "drinking moderately" you would not actually be in ketosis, would you?
do you think, for the average active pod listener, it is worth going the extra step from low carb to ketosis (out of season)? what would be the benefit?
A few guest interviews while Brock is on vacation?
If you have time and enough questions for a podcast I'd love to hear it, and it doesn't matter to me whether you have a side-kick or not!
Tawnee for guest Co-host!
Another great post, thanks Ben! For the link to magnesium glycinate, it just takes you to Amazon. Did you have a particular brand you wanted to recommend?
Re: Amenorrhea
Hi Ben – Would you please provide the titles and publications dates of the studies you mentioned so that I may look into them further? Thanks in advance.
Hi Ben – Please consider having Jessa fill in for Brock next week. Post on Facebook asking for family/kids/home related questions that you guys could kick around on the show. Thanks always for your efforts.
On a side note, that banner ad with Macca is such a terrible picture with the crazy way he's standing – "Hey look at the package!!" Does make me smile, though!
Great idea for Jessa to fill in, Jeff! Of course, that might mean I have to check a few things off the honey-do list.
I just climbed out of the wood fired bath. 41° .02M/L MgC and a glass of shiraz. Lovely cloudy sky, cattle lowing, lambs bleating, dogs barking. Ready for a big 8.
Ben,
Since I started eating a low carb , high fat diet I started to have muscle twitches. I take Intracal (calcium & magnesium) every day, I started to spray magnesium oil as well with no relief in sight. On days when I eat butter or coconut oil twitching seems to worsen. What can I do to eliminate this issue ? I don't want to go back to eating the way I used to because since changing my diet, positive improvements occurred. Thanks for you're reply in advance.
I reported on this (and a solution) in a podcast a little while back, here is the full written transcript:https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/2012/09/episode-210-full-transcript/ben
Ditto to Melissa's comment
I agree to keep the podcast going, but I understand if you need a break! I listen to them while I'm at work :)
Thank you for responding to my question about the Ketosis and elevated heart rate. Since I asked the questions I was having more frequent episodes of rapid resting heart rate. I listened to your last weeks podcast on Tuesday and in your presentation you quickly mentioned the low sodium issue while in Ketosis. I took 1/4 tsp of salt in water before bed and in the morning. The symptoms have not returned. I appreaciate the detailed information you gave this podcast for a deeper understanding of the issue and other supplements I should be taking.
Nice! Congratulations on getting that figured out, Jason!
Another great podcast! Thanks :)
In answer to the question at the end, I vote for a stand-in co-host!
If you can't find one, I'll do it. We can't be without the podcast!
Thanks for feedback Daniela. Brock, you may want to warn her what she could be getting into with that offer. ;)
Daniela, don't do it! Ben's a total tyrant who makes me cry at least twice every recording session! :)
