In the Quick & Dirty Tips article “7 Ways to Burn Calories By Standing More”, you learn about several studies that suggest sitting may in fact be:

A) slowly killing us

and

B) worse than smoking.

While these catchy headlines may be partially news-selling scare tactics, there’s definitely something to it.

You can see an infographic that sums things up at “Sitting Is Killing You”, read the New York Times article “Is Sitting A Lethal Activity?” ,and view a Fox News Report on “How Sitting Can Be As Deadly As Smoking”.

Of course, there are some solutions to the dangers of sitting – especially for those of us who would traditionally be forced to sit for long periods of time while at work.

For example, in “How To Turn Your Workspace Into A Calorie Decimating Standing Desk or Treadmill Workstation”, you can see some fantastic ways to not only keep yourself healthier while working, but also maximize fat burning.

In addition, you can look to a company such as US Corporate Wellness to introduce what I feel are some of the most cutting edge workplace health programs in America.

You can even use an app like “Time Out” to remind you to stop and take stretch or exercise breaks more frequently.

Finally, you can check out the infographic below, and then forward this article to your co-workers and supervisors.

What do you think? Is your workplace an exception, and if so, how? Do you have questions about how you can improve your workplace health and safety?

  3. Workplace safety isn't just an issue for manufacturing, construction, and other labor intensive vocations. There can be dangers just by sitting at a desk as mentioned in this infographic. Proper safety gear such as wrist guards and screen protectors should be used to help eliminate strain, while all workers should do what they can to get up, stretch, and walk around.

Never had a back issue in my life but started to get a tightness in my lower back on the job I'm at now. I've gotten around that now, but it seemed to result from sitting too far forward. (Odd shaped desk, long story.)

Don't know if my chair is at exactly 135 degrees, but cranking that thing back was the fix though I still make a point to get up and walk around even when I'm busy enough to not get up for hours.

Thanks for the tips Ben. I just adjusted my office chair to 135 degree angle and my back pain is much better. Albert in New York
