New Discoveries

Turn Low Motivation Into a SOLID Training Session with the “Just Start” Workout Strategy (*Here's* What to Do) ➡️

Some days, motivation is the limiting factor, not strength, endurance, or time.

Ben Greenfield Workout

On those days, the smartest move isn’t forcing intensity, but overcoming the psychological barrier to starting.

This simple “stack-and-restart” circuit does exactly that.

  • You begin with one easy movement, maybe one minute on a stationary bike.
  • Then you restart and add one exercise, such as the bike, followed by 15 push-ups.
  • Restart again and add another: bike, pushups, then squats.
  • Then again, adding a row, a carry, a jump, or anything else you want.
  • You keep looping from the beginning and stacking movements until your workout window is done.

Why this works is both psychological and physiological.

Psychologically, you’re leveraging momentum and novelty. Your brain agrees to a single task, and by the time effort builds, you’re already invested. Each added movement gives you a small dopamine hit that keeps you engaged rather than overwhelmed.

Physiologically, repeated restarts keep heart rate elevated without long continuous strain, improve work capacity under fatigue, and recruit additional motor units as the session progresses. You’re also training metabolic flexibility by shifting between aerobic, anaerobic, and strength-based demands in the same session.

The benefits add up quickly:

  • Higher training consistency on low-energy days
  • Less boredom, more compliance
  • A natural mix of strength and conditioning
  • Improved lactate tolerance and muscular endurance
  • Strong mitochondrial and metabolic stimulus

This isn’t meant to replace structured programming. It’s a bridge workout for days when your energy is low, but you still want a meaningful training signal. Often, what starts as a “just show up” session turns into far more work than you expected, simply because you stayed in motion.

This Week in Health & Performance: What the Latest Research Says

💪 Blood Sugar Control—Lift + HIIT Wins: New research shows that combining strength training with aerobic exercise, specifically high-intensity interval training, outperforms either approach alone for managing blood sugar and improving insulin sensitivity (study here).

❤️ The Plaque Hack You’ve Probably Never Heard Of: An inexpensive, largely ignored intervention can potentially help halt or even reverse arterial plaque accumulation, which raises uncomfortable questions about why this research has flown under the radar for decades (read more here).

🚽 Bathroom Scrolling Comes at a Cost: A recent study found that using your smartphone on the toilet is associated with a 46% increase in hemorrhoid risk, mostly due to longer time spent sitting and increased pelvic pressure (study here).

🧬 Longevity Myths—Is Anatomy Destiny?: Claims, including from Bryan Johnson, that male anatomy (penis size) predicts lifespan sparked headlines, but experts urge caution, noting that longevity is far more influenced by metabolic health, hormones, lifestyle, and environment than any single body metric (read more here).

Key Takeaway: From smarter training combinations and targeted micronutrients to cardiovascular prevention and everyday habits, the biggest health gains often come from simple, science-backed tweaks done consistently.
