    This podcast was quite thought provoking. I listened to it as I walked to my pilates class in 38 degree weather with a short-sleeved t-shirt, contemplating discomfort.

    While physical discomfort is clear, what this got me thinking about was mental discomfort. Not just boredom (as discussed), but even mental health. That thread of thought led me to thinking about how children are raised these days. We view any psychological discomfort as something to be avoided. Children should be happy ALL the time. They should not be confronted with any of the realities of the world, be that death, suffering, or otherwise. What has that led to?

    We now have embraced mental health as tantamount to any emotional discomfort is unacceptable. We have therapy dogs. We have countless drugs. We have a booming mental health industry. We have suicide, We have self-harm. We have all this stuff because we believe how we feel isn’t right. All based in large part on the belief that mental discomfort is a negative. What that means is that socially, we have taught people that if they are not happy and well-adjusted all the time, they need to be fixed. Yet our reactions to what goes on the world seems entirely rational (i.e., bad stuff happens and it doesn’t feel good – people let us down, we let ourselves down, famine, war, abuse…you name it). We are uncomfortable, and we should be.

    So instead of allowing ourselves this discomfort, we seek a remedy. And in that remedy is a loss of character, loss of mental strength, loss of personal responsibility, loss in the end of autonomy.

    Anyway, these are the ramblings in my head as I shivered my way to exercise. Thanks for stoking my brain flames.
