I recently read the book Earthing: The Most Important Health Discovery Ever! (and my twin boys also watched the accompanying documentary “THE EARTHING MOVIE“).

Although I already knew about the importance of having an intimate connection with the planet we live upon, this book blew my mind when it comes to identifying one of the best solutions for chronic inflammation, better sleep, enhanced deep sleep, and much more. So obviously, I had to get Clint on the show!

Clint Ober is the innovator behind the Grounding Movement & CEO of Earth FX Inc., a research and development company located in Palm Springs, California. A series of seemingly unrelated synchronistic events dating back to his early childhood led to a groundbreaking discovery that’s being recognized as the greatest health discovery of all time.

Grounding has now become a massive international movement—causing people to shed their shoes and reconnect electrically to the surface of the Earth.

Clint first learned about grounding when installing cable TV systems in Billings, Montana in the early 1960s. A decade later, he formed Telecrafter Corporation and built it into the largest provider of cable installation services in the United States. This company specialized in the proper grounding of cable installations for safety and TV signal stability.

In the 1980s, he turned his attention to the developing computer industry and partnered with McGraw-Hill to distribute live digital news services, via cable, to PCs. This led to the development of the first cable modem and an increased awareness of the need for proper system grounding.

Following a health challenge in 1995, Clint retired and embarked on a personal journey looking for a higher purpose in life. During his travels, he noticed people wearing plastic and rubber-soled shoes that insulate the body from Earth. He wondered if no longer being naturally grounded could affect us. The question led to an experiment that suggested grounding alone reduced chronic pain and improved sleep.

Thereafter, he developed a working hypothesis: Grounding the human body to the Earth normalizes the functioning of all of the body’s systems ​—​ the body utilizes the earth’s electrical potential and free electrons to maintain its internal electrical stability, normalizing all of its self-regulating and self-healing systems. Over the past twenty years, he has supported over 20 research studies* that collectively demonstrate that grounding reduces inflammation and promotes normal functioning of all body systems.

  • There was very little research on how grounding with the earth reduces pain and improves sleep
  • He attempted to find answers at UCLA but was basically laughed off the campus for his ideas
  • Two doctoral students at UCLA helped him design a private study:
    • 60 participants: 30 grounded, 30 ungrounded
    • Those who were grounded reported reduced pain, better sleep, among other positive results
    • Similar results among those exposed to EMF and not exposed to EMF
  • A skeptical anesthesiologist in San Diego was willing to help with the research; he was interested in saliva cortisol levels in his patients
    • Cortisol levels went from erratic to synchronized (within a similar range) after grounding at midnight during the study
    • Cortisol spikes from 4-6 am without grounding
    • Everyone's cortisol went up beginning at 4 am (with no other environmental cues) when grounded
    • Cortisol spike is what gives motivation to get out of bed
  • The only possible change at 4 am is in the earth, as the sun is about to rise
  • Measure electric fields in bedrooms where participants were sleeping via a grounding pad
  • The earth itself equalizes the body with the earth; electrons leave the body, or come to the body from the earth

    Does sleeping on the mat make you hot at night. As a 50+ female, sleep is elusive and often hot. Also I’m considering buying the Ooler as well but worried that the grounding mat will make me hot if I Only buy that.

    I was just wondering do cotton socks prevent proper grounding? Must the foot be completely bare?

    Also, would the anti-inflammatory effects of grounding help with treating Covid-19 symptoms (without neglecting other medically-advised treatments)?

    1. You can use cotton or wool socks with the Ground Therapy Universal Mat. The thinner the socks, the more benefit you’ll receive. That being said, socks will reduce the electron transfer to some extent, so bare skin contact will give you even more benefit than using the Ground Therapy Universal Mat with socks.

      Grounding is very beneficial for reducing inflammation and improving immune function, which is extremely helpful for everyday health or when you’re facing any wellness challenge.     Is there any concern for people taking blood pressure medications to use a grounding mat?

    1. Research has shown that grounding lowers inflammation and that inflammation is at the root of most modern health challenges. Additionally, research on the health benefits of grounding has shown improvements in blood pressure, blood viscosity, blood glucose, as well as thyroid, adrenal and other endocrine function. Therefore, blood thinners, blood pressure and blood glucose medications, as well as thyroid, adrenal and other hormonal medications, should be closely monitored, because the amount of medication may need to be decreased over time as you continue grounding.

      For blood pressure, this is as easy as monitoring your blood pressure at home at least once per day using a blood pressure cuff (which is good practice if you’re on blood pressure medication, regardless of whether or not you’re grounding). Then, if your blood pressure begins to correct, you’ll want to work with your doctor to determine how to adjust your medication dosage.

      The healthy range for blood pressure is between 90/60 and 120/80. The first number in your blood pressure reading is your systolic blood pressure. If your systolic blood pressure gets to the lower 100s or into the 90s, it’s a good time to contact your doctor, because they’ll probably want to adjust your blood pressure medication accordingly.

      Continue to monitor your blood pressure, because you may need to decrease your medication dosage several times. Many of our customers who consistently ground have adjusted their medication downward and eventually have been able to eliminate their blood pressure medication completely with their doctor’s supervision.

      I can not find it in writing so maybe I heard it on Podcast, but for sure read or heard someone say under one layer of sheet is fine.
      Seems to me it would matter what material the sheet is made of …not sure about satin or silk…cotton is somewhat conductive though has a pretty high resistance but that likely does not matter since they add a 1000 Ohms of resistance to the ground so it is safer and not a direct short.

    In the podcast you spoke about two people, one with bedroom EMF and one without EMF (adobe walls).

    Both showed improvements when grounded regardless of EMF’s. This makes me wonder if most/all damage from EMF’s can be solved by grounding?

      Another question, when I plug a regular headphone jack into a powered speaker and touch the other end (both are male) the speaker starts emitting sound. If you then ground yourself while touching the jack sound coming from the speaker has a huge change. Is that difference in sound the Earth’s electrical resonance passing though my body? Is grounding similar to the way PEMF’s effect your body?

    My wife works the overnight shift. Would she still benefit the same even if she wouldn’t be “waking up with the earth?” She’d be sleeping from like 8am to 4 pm for example.

    1. Yes, grounding in a park in New York City will still be effective, even if there are subway tunnels underneath the ground.

    Does wearing socks negate the benefits of wearing those earthing straps you can connect to your shoes?

    1. We at Ultimate Longevity do not sell the Erthe shoe straps. The company that does produce and sell them unfortunately doesn’t provide a way for the customer to test them for effectiveness, both when you first get the shoe straps or as you use them, to make sure they’re still working. Therefore, you wouldn’t be able to test how well they worked when wearing socks.

      BTW: If you purchase and start using the Erthe straps, it’s important to know that not all outdoor surfaces are grounded, and a grounding shoe will only ground you if you’re standing on a grounded surface. For example, before concrete is poured, there is often a plastic barrier that is put down to protect the concrete from water, weed growth, etc. 
      The grounding shoes will not ground you when you’re indoors either, unless you put your feet on one of our Ground Therapy Universal Mats that you can find at https://www.ultimatelongevity.com/earthing-grounding/products/ground-therapy-universal-mat.shtml?ref=8 This is because you can’t be grounded when you’re indoors unless there is a connection between you and the Earth via a cord that is connected to the ground port of a grounded electrical outlet or via a ground rod cord that connects directly to the Earth. Of course, you can use the Universal Mat with bare feet or with grounding shoe straps as long as you’ve verified the shoe straps are working. 
      We’ve often seen that if you test the Erthe shoe straps with your shoes outdoors (without socks), they will probably test for a proper ground connection (at least for a while), because there’s enough pressure to ground you with the shoe straps when you’re standing up. However, when you sit down, your feet rest on the shoe straps more lightly, so there often isn’t enough pressure to create a solid ground connection (even without socks). 
      Secondly, the shoe strap is a very small area of contact, which means it will provide far fewer beneficial electrons to you than placing your entire foot directly on the Universal Mat. 

      Lastly, keep in mind that the most important time to ground is when you sleep. This is for a few reasons. First, the more of your body that is touching a grounded surface, the more free electrons flow into you; in other words, more surface area contact means you get more electrons. Second, the longer you are grounded, the more benefit you’ll get, because you absorb more free electrons as more time passes. When you sleep grounded, your whole body is contacting the grounding mat for 6 to 8 hours at a time (or more). And, of course, your body does the most healing and repair while you sleep, making it an ideal time to be grounded. So sleeping grounded is the most important thing to do, but additional grounding is a valuable adjunct to grounded sleeping.

    I used to sleep on a grounding mat. Until I listened to one of your other podcasts on which a guy with an EMF meter went through your house. He mentioned that using a grounding mat in place with lots of EMF (in which I am when I travel to big cities) they can do more harm than good. Any truth to this?

      I’m wondering the same thing. I thought Brian Hoyer said the body can become like an antenna for EMFs when on a mat so he doesn’t recommend them?

      Regarding the topic of grounding, building biologists are often misinformed.

      There are two reasons that some individuals falsely claim that grounding is harmful in the presence of EMFs. I’ve addressed each below.

      The first false claim: Your body attracts EMFs to itself when grounded, thereby increasing your EMF exposure.

      EMFs pass through us all the time, regardless of whether or not we’re grounded. They emanate out from their source (i.e. smart meter, cellphone, etc) equally in all directions, similar to a ripple in a pond when a pebble is thrown into it. They cannot be attracted to a specific point or concentrated. Likewise, being grounded does not cause EMFs to be attracted to you. Any individual who claims that EMFs can be attracted to a specific point fundamentally misunderstands a basic principle of physics.

      The second false claim: You become an antenna when you’re grounded.

      Any electrical engineer or physicist knows that a grounded antenna doesn’t work. For an antenna to work, it cannot be grounded. Some of the confusion about antennas relates to the fact that masts and metal structures supporting large antennas are grounded, giving the impression that the antenna itself is grounded. That is not the case. The masts and supporting structures of antennas are grounded to protect against lightning, but the antenna itself is never grounded.

      Over the last 20 years, there have been over 20 significant clinical research studies that have been done on grounding. The results are nothing short of astonishing. All of the studies were conducted using indoor grounding devices.

      Here’s one example of a very pertinent study conducted on grounding that showed significant benefits from grounding even in the presence of an extremely high EMF environment.

      This study was done on premature babies in the ICU and was conducted by Penn State Health Hershey Medical Center. Some of the babies were in warmers, but a large portion of the babies were in incubators. Incubators produce an extremely high level of EMFs, and the highest level of EMFs is produced at top of the incubator right by the baby’s head.

      When the babies were measured prior to grounding, their vagal tone was very low – meaning they were in a state of extreme stress and their nervous system was stuck in sympathetic mode. The babies were then grounded to the ground port of a standard wall outlet. Once grounded, the babies’ vagal tone improved by 67% almost immediately. As long as the babies remained grounded, their improved vagal tone was maintained. Once they were no longer grounded, their improved vagal tone was no longer maintained and they returned to their high stress state.

      My Aunt has lupus, I’m visiting her soon and am going to let her borrow my grounding sleep mat, I know you explained a lot of the science about grounding but is there anything special with lupus and grounding that I could talk to her about?

However, the short answer to your question is that grounding can be extremely valuable for lupus, as well as other autoimmune conditions. The more she grounds, the more benefit she’ll get.

    Hi Ben – I’m considering the grounded sleep mat from Clint’s website after listening to your podcast. I also use the ChiliPad (Ooler). Do you know anything about using the two of them together – an ok idea? Or does it negate the effect of either of them? How should they be layered on the mattress (I’m assuming I would put the ChiliPad on top of the Grounded Sleep Mat)? thank you!

      Different companies. Beware of knock off companies — there are a ton of them. I’d buy from the company that Ben recommends. I’m very happy with the products I purchased and the exceptional service I received from Ultimate Longevity.

      I have the same question. The earthing.com website claims to sell the exact same products as Ultimate Longevity, mostly at the same prices but they also have at least one better deal. Ultimate Longevity, could you please clarify what is going on here? If this site is illegitimate, you should state that publicly. The earthing.com site appears to be legitimate and it also sells plenty of products on Amazon.

        1. Better to put the grounding mat on top of the Ooler and let the Ooler cool the grounding mat, which will then cool you.

          2. The Ground Therapy Sleep Mat can be placed under your fitted sheet or on top of your fitted sheet.

            The less material between your bare skin and the sleep mat, the quicker the electron transfer takes place, the greater the conductivity, and the more benefit you receive.

            However, it’s very important to be comfortable when you’re sleeping — because if you’re not comfortable, you won’t be able to sleep well — and quality sleep is essential for optimal health, as well as healing and repair. Therefore, if you need to use sheets and/or sleepwear to be comfortable when you sleep, certainly do so. Otherwise, trying to sleep when you’re uncomfortable would just counteract the slight benefit you would get from sleeping bare skin on the mat.

            Keep in mind that 90% or more of our customers use a fitted sheet and/or sleepwear and they still report excellent results.
