When I first met today's podcast guest, we were sitting in a sauna at Laird Hamilton and Gabby Reece's pool. He was sitting across from me and filled me in on some of the most advanced stem cell boosting tactics that I'd ever heard – including talking about little-known superfoods I'd never heard anyone expound upon with such knowledge.

Turns out this guy, whose name is Darin Olien, is actually called “the Indiana Jones of superfoods.” Since 2005 he has successfully sourced more than 300 foods and ingredients from around the world as an exotic superfoods hunter, supplement formulator, and environmental activist. Today, he is a renowned authority on nutrition, hydration, and the health potential of foods and herbs and he’s on a mission to help everyone learn about them and use them to feel their best.

Darin is the formulator of the superfood-packed Shakeology® and a full plant-based detoxification program. His book, SuperLife: The 5 Simple Forces That Will Make You Healthy, Fit, and Eternally Awesome, offers resources for easy lifestyle changes to create optimal health in your body and live your best life possible. In this groundbreaking health and lifestyle guide, the superfoods expert and nutritionist provides the key to understanding and utilizing the five life forces—the sole factors that determine whether or not we will be healthy, fit, and free of illness.

In SuperLife, Darin Olien provides us with an entirely new way of thinking about health and well-being by identifying what he calls the life forces: Quality Nutrition, Hydration, Detoxification, Oxygenation, and Alkalization. Olien demonstrates in great detail how to maintain these processes, thereby allowing our bodies to do the rest. He tells us how we can maintain a healthy weight, prevent even the most serious of diseases, and feel great. He explains that all of this is possible without any of the restrictive or gimmicky diet plans that never work in the long term.

Olien has traveled the world, exploring the health properties of foods that have sustained indigenous cultures for centuries. Putting his research into practice, he has created a unique and proven formula for maximizing our bodies’ potential. He also includes a “how-to-eat” user’s guide with a shopping list, advice on “what to throw away,” a guide to creating a healthy, balanced diet plan, and advice on how to use supplements effectively.

Written in Olien’s engaging conversational style, Superlife is a one-of-a-kind comprehensive look at dieting and nutrition, a timeless and essential guide to maintaining the human body and maximizing its potential.

    Hey Ben,

Could you provide some resources or product links to your water filtration system ?

I’d like to create my own and combine it with the rock stack I made.

    Cheers mate,

    Hi Ben,

Just finished Darens book Superlife and have some criticisms regarding his suggestions on meat. Such as IGF1 being toxic for your body. I found this book had a lot of blanket statements that could be easily criticized. Huge disappointment because I really liked Daren and the podcast. I do like a lot of his suggestions but plenty of it also seems like propaganda and advertisements for beach body

  10. Lisa Love says:

Hi Ben. This was one of my favorite podcasts thanks! I have a question for you about the paudarco bark tea. I remember you and Dr. Mercola talking about it and found your recipe you posted. I bought Mercola’s new book only to read about this bark tea and couldn’t find it in there at all…unless munchkins pulled wool over my eyes as I read! You mention it again here and I would love some more info about it. Questions…do I boil the bark or just leave it to sit over night in water? Traditionally you boil it, but not sure if that messes it up for the function we are using it for? Also, the blending process…how long do you blend it for? Do you refrigerate as well? Any other tid bits about it that you feel important would be great. I’m putting the coconut oil and lecithin into it and love this tea, but still am not quite sure what it’s doing for me. Maybe this would be a good topic for an upcoming anti-aging podcast? I heard you are reversing your age…I’m so into that…and would love a podcast about all the things you are doing for this! I love what you share with us so much! Thank you!!

I’m chiming in a little late here, but I am a huge fan of Brazilian superfoods and have found this company that sells Amazonian fruit purees that looks pretty legit (but hard to tell). What do y’all think?

  12. James D says:

When searching for info about Moringa online I noticed there are in fact multiple types of Moringa trees. Do you happen to know if there was a particular type that is more healthful (so to speak), and also does anyone know of a good place to obtain seeds for a moringa tree?

Was an informative podcast, thanks Ben.

    1. Darin Olien says:

yes, the best and most nutritional research is around moringa oleifera. This is the one to get for sure! There a lot of seeds out there but perhaps research Organic Moringa Oleifera seeds out of florida and that is best bet since the out of country ones of India or Africa you never can be sure you are getting good ones.

  13. Candi says:

Thank you Ben for the amazing informative podcasts. I really loved hearing Darin talk about the new Baru nut. Just wondered if this nut could be made into like a butter like peanut butter?

The other question is which Moringa is the best to buy as amazon has many different brands. Some are not pure.

    1. Darin Olien says:

Hey Candi, We are working on huge procurement of the nuts in Brazil over the next year so we can launch the Baruzieta (Brazilian true name for the tree an nut) and once we have the supply chain sorted out on the large scale we definitely will be working on some formulations. Yes, I have made the butter and it is INCREDIBLE! Not as much free oil as peanut butter.

There is not a GREAT moringa on the market that I have seen or researched however, Virgin Product has a decent one.…

  14. Ryan says:

    Hi Ben, ..Or Darin,

Are you guys consuming that dark husk on the Baru nut or shelling it off. Just curious. Thanks for all of the great info.

    All the best,

    1. Darin Olien says:

Absolutely! That is where a lot of the Antioxidants are and good fiber! Totally safe to do

  15. JJ says:

Good podcast, I have it saved for a second listen. I was very interested in the air to water machine talk. Being from Houston I have grown accustom to living in 70-80 % humidity and have a dehumidifier in the house. The thought of reusing the coupious amounts of water pulled from the air has crossed my mind. Two questions I have are what is the difference from a regular dehumidifier and a air to water machine? Second question is the area I live in the area near the port where the refineries and chemical plants are located. Would there be a concern for pollutants in the water that was gathered from the air?

    1. Darin Olien says:

Hey JJ! Yes, it is always fun to engage with Ben, thanks for listening!

Houston is certainly ideal for air to water machines. I have done tests down there. with them. Regular humidifiers is the same idea obviously however without any filtration systems. You have to filter. There can be all kinds of things in the air so a multi-stage filter system is essential. And that is the difference. As far as I know only the particle size or aerosols (example, spray paint cans, etc) spayed in the same area of the water machine are small enough particles to not be filtered out of of the .01micron filters) I could not be certain if the chemical paints you are near would not be in the air. Sounds like you should see what kind of air report is out there for you anyway to collect just to know for your own health, regardless.

      1. JJ says:

        Awesome! Thanks for the feedback.

  16. Angela says:

    Awesome Podcast!

I have tried the Baru nuts and they are delicious and addictive.

Any updates on the Totipotent Stem Cell center in North Carolina? I did some digging and just curious if this is the place Darin is referring to: Ortho Biologix in Charlotte NC (

Also wanted to know when Darin’s water filtration system will be available to purchase?

    Thank you so much!!!

    Angela Kindzia

    1. Darin Olien says:

Yes, the Barukas are very addictive in a great way!

The stem cell technology is not out in the public yet. We are starting to set up clinical trials, working with Veterans, perfection nutraceuticals. We are at least a year a way from public use. Hang in there!!! This indeed, is a game-shifter!

The filtration with advance hydrogen activation is coming being finished in the next month or 2. Check back to and/or I can talk to Ben about featuring it.

      1. Angela says:

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply Darin.

I will keep checking your website for the filtration system.

Thank you for all the awesome work you do and bringing us new super foods!

  17. Regis says:

    Hi Ben,

Could you link to iron and manganese waters filters you talk about? Learned ferritin serum test trick from Dr. Mercola show, trying to reduce iron especially. I think sources are plentiful just from everyday foods alone. Thank you in advance.

    1. They're pretty fringe and I'm currently traveling in Finland. My water guy at home installed them. Here are basic specs: SYSTEM SPECIFICATION

1 ea. Hydrogen peroxide injection system with Stenner peristaltic injection pump, 1” water meter with pulse output and 15 gallons 35% H2O2.

1 ea. Safe Water 12×52 EcoGlass Automatic back washing iron filter

1 ea. 4.5×20 Lock-ring housing with bypass and 4.5×20 Nano filter.

The System cost installed is $6,250 plus $506.25 sales tax. Terms ½ down with order and balance due on install.

Labor and parts 12 months, filter valve 60 months, filter tank ten years. Filter cartridge life unknown at this time but we would expect twice a year replacement.

      4.5X20 Nano filter $216

  18. Lance says:

Always interesting to listen to Darrin’s stories. Listening to him on the Rich Roll, podcast a while back made me believe that he is very picky about specific products, especially moringa. Do those Amazon links reflect recommended products, or just general examples? Also, the coffee fruit link was vague.

    1. Mostly general examples in Amazon links but several of those I personally use…

  19. Jim says:

In the show it was mentioned there are no reliable sources for high quality moringa, but it was being worked on from a USA source. Has this source been tested and ready for market? Where can we get quality moringa?

If we want to add hydrogen to our water at home, where do we purchase the hydrogen? If exact vendors can’t be named, what should we look for when Sourcing this?

    1. Darin Olien says:

Hey Jim, I am in the middle of the field work and nutritional testing right now. This will be a commodity for the industry. Not any specific retailer at this point. There is some decent moringa at Virgin Products…

  20. Matt says:

Dying to know more about Totipotent Stem Cells! Keep us posted Darin. Please come back with a follow up after your treatment.

  21. Gustavo Luken says:

I really enjoy your podcast in the morining while I’m fixing my superfood breakfast. I just heard this new podcast and i just had to ask, why is no one else but Darin Olien finding this, all of the things he found, apparently no one else is aware. But aren’t those plants, nuts been there for hundreds and maybe thousands of years? Where is the date on all this, cause He’s the one making it, selling it and it’s very bias. I try a lot of things you talk about in the show. For example when he talked about Baru Nuts, he mentioned all the beneficial contents it posses, I would love to see where he sampled those nuts and post the information on a website or a book or an article. I’m a Doctor and I’m a fan of the power of placebo, it’s an amazing effect, I think it would make things interesting if you interview Erik Vance, author of “Suggestible you”, about pain-opioids-placebo-exercise. We have opiod receptors in our brain and if we could take opioids, do exercise, feel no pain and gain strength then titrate opiod doses, till we en up with a placebo and have our brain think it’s opiods, we could feel no pain and gain more strength on our placebo opiod effect, reaching farther limits.

    1. Great question! I passed it along to Darin- here's his reply: it’s not that no one else is aware of all the things it’s that many people, most people do not do the work of showing up, seeing the processing, growing and testing. As for baru nuts we have done all the tests ourselves of the nutrients and the lack of anti-nutrients which is why I decided to sell this nut. Of all the things I found this one offers so many good nutrients for people being the most nutrient dense nut, good for the environment with no external water footprint, good for reforestation of the savannah that is been lost to this powerful tree and good for the poor people of the savannah to have good income. This Baru was a no brainer to bring to the world. With every real nutrients and a real win all the way around. It has one of the best flavors for people to enjoy as well which makes it unstoppable. I love the things you're saying about the placebo as well. That is of course true but when you combine that with real nutrient benefits, it is a home run!

  22. Tim Fitzgerald says:

Awesome podcast Ben!!! Learned so much!

Regarding the Baru nuts. Looks like the link is for roasted nuts… Are they special that they don’t oxidize when roasted? Wouldn’t they be better raw? Since they are compared to peanuts and cashews, that raises a couple red flags regarding lectins. Do you know if they have a high amount of lectins?

    Thanks Ben!

    1. Darin Olien says:

Hey Tim! Thanks for the great questions. Yes, Baru nuts are one of those foods, tree nuts that has to be roasted as they have a huge amount of anti-nutrients in the raw state. When roasting this is when all the nutrients become available. I had the same type of questions when I discovered them which is why we did all the testing ourselves to see the extraordinary amount of nutrients in this nut. So, no they can’t be consumed raw without some serious digestive hurt. The nuts, Dipteryx alata are in the leguminous family without all of the mycotoxins and aflotoxins found in peanuts because peanuts are close to the ground gaining huge molds. Sine the Baru are a tree nut with no actual nut exposure to the environment since they are protected by a very hard shell they are not exposed to the same vulnerabilities peanuts are. We simply compare them to peanuts from only a taste similarity. As far as Lectins go we have tested ourselves plus researched in the country or origin with no measurable amounts of lectins. more info
