Listener Q&A:

As compiled, deciphered, edited and sometimes read by Rachel Browne, the Podcast Sidekick.

5 Reasons You Get Burnt Out From Exercise

Fikayo says: He's 25 years old and he's started to plateau with his training and dip in performance. Every time he tries to push beyond the plateau, his body burns out or he feels sick. He's wondering if you have experienced this before, or if you have any advice for what he's going through? Thanks so much!

How To Use Light To Boost Testosterone & Sperm Production

Dave says: He's calling from Australia. He wants to say thank you for all the amazing content you produce. He has a question about testosterone and sperm production as it relates to infrared. His wife and him are trying to have their first child in the next few months and he currently practices hot yoga once per week. It's a far infrared style of hot yoga at 38 degrees Celsius. Do you think that would interfere with sperm production and testosterone production?

10 Natural Alternatives To Common Medications

Jen says: She's a huge fan of the show and she feels like her quality of life has improved so much since she started listening to you. She has a question. She's trying to do more natural healing – taking turmeric for inflammation etc.  Can you give a quick run down on ways she can replace ibuprofen, heartburn medication, mood enhancers etc- just the basic natural alternatives to everyday medications?

In my response, I recommend:
Curcumin (by Thorne)
Sleep Remedy (with melatonin)
Fish Oil (SuperEssentials)
Bergamot Orange and Peppermint oil (essential oil)
Alpha Lipoic Acid (Thorne)
Vitamin D/K blend (Thorne)
Quercetin
Bitter Melon Extract
Ceylon Cinnamon

How CytoDetox Works

There'sa says: She's wondering if you still like the Cytodetox?

    Hi Ben,

Love the podcast, I have about a 1.5 hour commute work and another 1 hour commute back 5 days a week and your podcasts turn my car into a mobile classroom that I enjoy. Heck I’ll even listen to your podcast on my off days, and I have my girlfriend listening to it too haha.

Anyway, I was wondering I could get your Kona Island hunting guide so I can plan a trip sometime in the summer. Definitely want to have that same experience.

    1. Yep, you need to email Patrick Fisher at [email protected] and he will totally hook you up. Let me him know I sent you…

I am actually a little over a month off of all meds, and i was on two for depression/anxiety, i used to rely on ibprophin and naproxin, and so on. there are a few stressful times when i want to reach for ibprophin but i fight it! i will be checking out all those recommendations. Especially looking forward to the cbd ;)
I have many more questions ill be calling in for soon, thank you!!!

Interesting stuff. I was wondering a few things:

    * I have trigeminal neuralgia, and was wondering if you know of anything that would suggest that increasing vagus nerve tone may help (or if you have any other suggestions).

    * Since the vagus is kind of in the middle of the head, is it necessary to submerge one’s entire face, or would the back/top of the head suffice, provided I still get a “brain freeze” (makes it easier to read, etc.)?

    * I always thought low HRV (relative to an athlete’s individual baseline) was a symptom, not a cause, of burnout/inadequate recovery, and so attempting to increase HRV on its own wouldn’t really impact recovery status (as that would simply change the baseline level). However, it sounds like you are suggesting that the relationship goes in both directions; is this correct?

    1. Yes, working on heart rate variability and vagus nerve tone will help tremendously. I would also review a couple of these articles by Jack Kruse:
      https://www.jackkruse.com/what-is-peripheral-neur…

      and

Vancouver, WA. I didn’t know it was a place. When I heard it, I thought you did a Putin inspired annexing of Vancouver, BC. :-)

And to Rachel, our worrying warrior: I can’t hear the difference when your side-kick pronounces [bio-hack conference in Las] Vegas or Vagus [nerve-tone]. So don’t let him make fun of your OZ accent.

  5. Ebrunner says:

Really interesting stuff, especially on the burnout topic. I have trigeminal neuralgia, and since the vagus is so closely connected, was wondering if vagus tone could be an issue. Have you heard of anything like that?

I was also curious whether it’s necessary to immerse the whole face to stimulate the vagus, getting the head/neck gets cold enough to get a brain freeze would suffice (ex showering w/cold water hitting the top/back of head or doing the backstroke in a cold pool)?

Finally, I’m curious whether low HRV/vagus nerve tone is a cause or symptom of burnout. I’ve always understood low HRV to be an indicator of inadequate recovery, but not the cause (i.e, once recovered, HRV readings will have come back to normal, but actively trying to increase HRV on its own won’t really improve recovery). You seem to suggest it actually works in both directions – improving vagus nerve tone may help athletes improve work capacity/recovery ability. Was I hearing you right?

    Hi Ben,

Can you post the link for your hemp oil? I have Plantar Fasciitis on one foot and I was wondering if it would help! Any thoughts on plantar Fascitis?

    1. And yes, can be helpful for plantar fascitiis but also do search for plantar fascitiis here on the site!

  7. Trevor Tabaka says:

    Hey Ben,

I wanted to comment about the CBD oil and paypal issues. I am guessing that it is due to the DEA declaring that it is going to treat ANY cannabinoid from the cannabis sativa plant as a schedule 1 drug (I know this is absolutely outrageous, as if the scheduling wasnt already) as of January 13th(?), 2017. So on a federal level it is technically illegal, and I am sure Paypal then has to abide by these laws or atleast wants to not take chances. Here is one source but google-ing it will provide many sources.

    Hi Ben,

What are your thoughts on the Complete Multi + Liver Detox from BodyHealth? Is it high quality and would you recommend it?

    1. It is indeed a good multivitamin. But I am still a bigger fan of the Thorne multivitamin: https://greenfieldfitnesssystems.com/product/thor…

  9. Rob says:

Awesome podcast as usual, still I’d very much like to hear your take on the IF for teenagers though. Thanks Ben!
