I recently read Sound Medicine: How to Use the Ancient Science of Sound to Heal the Body and Mind. From a leading neurologist, neuroscientist, and practitioner of Ayurvedic medicine, it is a rigorous scientific investigation into the power of sound healing that shows readers how they can use it to improve their mental and physical wellbeing.

Why does a baby’s cry instantaneously flood a mother’s body with a myriad of stress hormones?

How can a song on the radio stir up powerful emotions, from joy to anger, regret to desire?

Why does sound itself evoke such primal and deeply felt emotions?

A vibration that travels through air, water, and solids, sound is produced by all matter and is a fundamental part of every species’ survival. But there is a hidden power within sound that has only just begun to be investigated. The book Sound Medicine takes you on a journey through the structure of the mouth, ears, and brain to understand how sound is translated from acoustic vibrations into meaningful neurological impulses.

Renowned neurologist, author of the book and Ayurvedic physician—and of course, my guest on today's podcast—Dr. Kulreet Chaudhary studies how different types of sound impact the human body and brain uniquely, and explores the physiological effects of sound vibration, from altering mood to healing disease. Blending ancient wisdom with modern science, Dr. Chaudhary traces the history of sound therapy and the use of specific mantras from previously unknown texts—traced back to the Siddhas, a group of enlightened yogis who created a healing tradition that served as the precursor to Ayurvedic medicine—to explain the therapeutic application of sounds for a wide range of conditions.

During this show, you'll get practical, step-by-step lessons for using music and mantras, whether you’re a beginner or searching for a more advanced practice, to improve your health in body, mind, and spirit.

Dr. Kulreet Chaudhary’s combined expertise in both modern neurology and the ancient science of health known as Ayurveda has uniquely positioned her as an expert able to pull from the broadest possible base to treat her clients. She is passionate about raising awareness for the need of a paradigm shift in contemporary medicine that focuses on patient empowerment and a health-based (rather than disease-based) medical system.

Dr. Chaudhary was the director of Wellspring Health in Scripps Memorial Hospital for ten years, and remains a pioneer in the field of Integrative Medicine. She has successfully developed a powerful system to manage chronic neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and migraine headaches by incorporating fundamental changes in diet, behavior, and stress—in addition to the standard allopathic approach to these issues. This program has been so successful that many patients now use it not just for neurological issues but also for a wider range of health concerns, including weight issues and chronic disease.

Dr. Chaudhary is also the author of The Prime and has appeared as a medical expert on numerous programs including The Dr. Oz Show and Home & Family, where her teachings about Ayurvedic medicine have been applauded by a national audience. She is also a neuroscientist and has participated in over 20 clinical research studies in the areas of multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, ALS, and diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Her research includes groundbreaking work in stem cell therapies for diabetic peripheral neuropathy and drug development for the treatment of ALS. • Primary cilia quiver like tuning forks
  • Strong human bias of what qualifies as “sound”
  • Vibratory medicine will increase in popularity in the next few decades
  • Safer and more effective than invasive surgeries

-Targeting cells or organs with specific hertz frequencies…18:49

  • Cells have their own individual “songs”: a unique frequency that can be translated into audible sound
  • Different cells associated with different tissues carry different primary resonant frequency
    • Tissues have their own internal frequencies
    • The primary resonant frequency, like, of a liver cell is its unique vocal fingerprint; unique to that particular tissue
  • Theory: Exposing unhealthy tissue to its own primary resonant frequency can return it to its healthy state
    • The same philosophy/science behind the ancient practices
  • Sound therapy part of a treatment plan for physical and mental illness; incorporated into different therapies like diet/herbal recommendations, yoga, exercise…
  • Ancient records in India describe the successful use of sound in treating cancer, paralysis, etc.
  • Future research will be on how sound affects electromagnetic waves in the body and causing biochemical changes
  • Tuning the Human Biofield  by Eileen Day McKusick

-The biofield explained…29:40

  • The term came from the National Institute of Health, originally coined by Dr. Beverly Rubik
  • The biofield is a massless field; surrounds and permeates living bodies and affects their biology
  • It refers to the parts of you that can't be seen or felt, but affect the biochemistry
  • Nature's original “wireless communication system”
  • Holding onto “old science” while “new science” is being proven to be correct

In two separate podcasts, this and Dave Asprey’s, I got chills when Dr. Kulreet chanted the mantra. In the past, I’ve tried Daoist exercises to get oneself to be able to feel one’s own Chi (or Prana in Sanskrit, or biofield in ‘modern Western science language’) with some success, and maybe that’s why i’m getting these chills. I remember learning that ancient Daoist practitioners also included sounds and breath as a part of natural (natural in Dao means in harmony with nature; hyper-processed vegetable oils is not as nature intended and is thus not Dao) healthy living, going as far as to say, and i’m paraphrasing, “the remainder of your life is not based on how much time you have left, but by how much breaths you have left.” Ancient Yogis also use breathwork. Hmmmmmm.Coincidence? I don’t think so.

  2. John Hicks says:

I can’t find any info on the studies showing how the frequency of heparin applied to water has the same medicinal effect as heparin. This sounds amazing. Can anyone post a link? She said it’s been proven multiple times. Thanks

  3. tom says:

hi, thanx for the interesting and inspiring podcast. while I practised the given Mantra, I wondered why there are eight chants but only seven Chakras to focus on. I am wondering if there is an introduction or an end but could not really find out in the podcast. dr chaudhary said that there is no real chant for the Crown-Chakra but then there would be only six chakras and still eight chants. I would be grateful for an answer and hope i have not missed the Point. sincerely, tom

Loved this podcast! There is an amazing practitioner in Vermont that uses the Energy Genesis ™ technology to apply sound healing. She, and this technology, are ahead of their time. Life changing really. https://www.lucidpathwellness.com/

Hi! Super interesting podcast, thanks a bunch! I’m curious if you’ve heard of the Healy? It’s a micro current personal device that has specific frequencies (hertz) for countless areas/issues (specific organs to extreme stress). I would love to hear your take on the product. I have been using mine for the past three months with great results. I feel it’s somewhat related to the sound therapy. Thanks for your time!

  6. Tyson says:

Hello Dr. KC. The topic of vibration at a cellular level has been on my mind a few months now, its super intriguing. About once a week I do a full body movement of Lymph, using one of those 1-800-# hand massage tools. I usually feel great after, cough up tons of clear, small particle phlegm as I break up the fascia. There’s something quite magical with adding heavy vibration of the lungs, however can’t quite put my finger on the mechanics yet (Ben?). I’m wondering what your opinion is regarding the EMF I’m also influencing on the body with a device like that. I assume the Wifi / bluetooth LTE from the smartphone is way worse, but I’m wondering if I’m really doing myself any good in the aftermath of it. Any other vibration tools you’d recommend that can really get the facia loosened up ? Is the EMF I’m exposed to harmless compared to other sources? Can’t wait for iTunes to put your Mantras back online ! -Thanks for all that you share with the world, -Tyson

If I was to stick myself into an MRI for a scan would this have an impact on my nature bio rhythms and frequencies?

  8. christopher aspinall says:

    Fabulous listen. Many thanks

I have tried to buy the recording on i tunes but it is not available.

    1. christopher aspinall says:

I have found it now but it’s saying it is not available

    2. Kulreet says:

Hi Christopher, my team is working on a solution. I’ll post a response as soon as we know why it’s not available. Warmly, Dr. KC

      1. christopher aspinall says:

Thank you so much. Really looking forward to buying it and getting started.

        Best wishes

        Chrid

        1. Kulreet Chaudhary says:

Thank you so much for your patience as Dr. my team sorted out the problem regarding the Mantra CD on iTunes. We received the following reply from the iTunes support team.

          Warmly,
          Dr. KC

          Message From iTunes:

“The link is still working and I was able to get it to open iTunes. It should first open up the Apple Music link, and then you may have to hit “Open in iTunes” or “Buy for 9.99” to get to the “store” where it’s for sale.

If you do not have iTunes installed, then it cannot open iTunes and the album can not be purchased (for Download). Also, an album cannot be purchase or downloaded from Apple Music, aka the “Browse” tab of iTunes. Only the “store” tab.

Try this link https://music.apple.com/us/album/chakra-chant-ep/1333553039. It should pull up the Apple Music preview in your browser and then you can hit “Buy for 9.99” to open iTunes (if installed)

If none of this is working, then there is a problem with the device you are using. Please note that many Apple devices themselves no longer support iTunes purchases from a mobile device. It’s best to use a computer for this, in that case.”

      2. Gretchen says:

Yes I tried to buy it as well says not available.?

        1. Kulreet Chaudhary says:

Hi Gretchen, take a look at the response to Christopher above.
          Warmly,
          Dr. KC

    3. RayWilly says:

It’s available and downloadable on Amazon as well.

  9. Inogen MacKenzie says:

This was really interesting, but from what you were both saying, it seems that only humans are affected by the vibrations that we call ‘sound’. Can this be true? If it is, has anyone any idea when in evolution the ability first appeared?

    1. Kulreet says:

      Hello Ingen,

All beings, even plants, are effected by sound. But only human beings (for the most part) can achieve higher states of consciousness through sound. Your pets, however, and even plans can experience physical benefits from sound.

  10. Trudi says:

Kia Ora Ben – great podcast, thank you! I’m an acupuncturist and have been adding more and more sound to my work over the last 5 years, with singing bowls, Acutonics and Biofield Tuning tuning forks. Eileen McKusick and Dr Chaudhary have both been really helpful for me getting over the idea that it is just fringe woo (yes, I guess some would find that comment funny from a person using needles as her main therapy!). I would love to hear you interview Eileen as well. Thanks so much, love your work! Arohanui from Aotearoa
