New Discoveries
🫒 New Research Shows Olive Oil is Still the King of Healthy Fats—Linked to Longevity & Disease Prevention
If there’s one kitchen staple that stands the test of time for heart health, brain function, and longevity, it’s extra virgin olive oil. 🫒💪You’ve heard me rave about the Mediterranean diet before, and now there’s fresh science backing up why olive oil (OO) remains among the top foods for a healthy, longer lifespan…
A brand-new systematic review and meta-analysis—we’re talking data from 14 studies with over 681,000 adult men and women—just dropped some serious stats about the benefits associated with OO consumption. People who regularly included olive oil in their diets benefited from:
✅ 15% reduction in all-cause mortality (in other words, OO is linked to a longer lifespan, which explains why it's a staple in the diets of many centenarians living in the Mediterranean).
✅ 16% lower risk of cardiovascular mortality.
✅ 11% decrease in cancer mortality.
OO goes beyond being a “healthy (monounsaturated) fat”, too—it's also packed with antioxidants like polyphenols and anti-inflammatory compounds that support heart health, brain function, and even longevity. And unlike seed oils, extra virgin olive oil is minimally processed, meaning it's made from only cold-pressed olives without extreme heat or harsh chemicals that can ruin its protective compounds.
But here's the key: You need to seek out the real, high-quality stuff. Go for organic, cold-pressed, extra virgin OO, preferably from a single source, and keep it in a dark glass bottle to protect those delicate compounds.
Here’s an even bigger takeaway: it’s not just about adding olive oil to your diet—it’s about what you’re replacing. Most pantries are stocked with cheap, ultra-processed seed oils like canola, soybean, sunflower, corn, and safflower, which sneak their way into everything from salad dressings and protein bars to granola and so-called “healthy” snacks. These oils aren’t neutral—they’re metabolic wrecking balls packed with inflammatory compounds.
In my recent podcast with Dr. Cate Shanahan (“DARK Calories! How Vegetable Oils Destroy Your Health (& How You Can Get It Back)”), we break down why seed oils are one of the biggest threats to your health today. Dr. Cate explains how, unlike olive oil, seed oils:
⚠️ Can cause oxidative stress that damages your cells, mitochondria, and DNA.
⚠️ Contribute to insulin resistance, which makes fat loss a heck of a lot harder.
⚠️ Deplete essential nutrients and antioxidants, including vitamin E and glutathione.
⚠️ Create trans fats and toxins during high-heat industrial processing.
⚠️ Promote inflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction (hello, chronic disease).
Fun fact (or horrifying fact, depending on how you look at it): The toxic byproducts in most seed oils are so damaging that consuming fried foods made with them has been compared to smoking cigarettes. Yeah, it’s that bad.
💡Bottom line? Start checking the oil labels in your kitchen, clear out the toxic oils, and swap them for high-quality OO. Here are my quick tips for maximizing olive oil’s positive impact:
🫒 Aim for 2-4 tablespoons daily to hit the sweet spot.
🥗 Go for organic, cold-pressed, extra virgin olive oil from a single source (such as Italy, Spain, France, or California) for the highest antioxidant punch.
🍳Drizzle it over salads (bonus points for adding additional longevity foods like greens and nuts), or cook with it at moderate heat. Despite myths, high-quality extra virgin olive oil holds up well to heat, such as when sautéing or pan-frying, as long as the temp isn't scorching.
