Is Training Close to Tiring Out Essential for Both “Big” Gains and Strength?

Ever wondered just how hard you need to push your muscles to the brink during resistance training to really ramp up your strength and muscle growth? Well, new research sheds light on this very topic.

Here's the scoop: The study zeroes in on what's known as “proximity to failure” in resistance training. This is all about how close you get to that moment where another rep is just not happening. To gauge this, researchers used a metric called “repetitions in reserve” (RIR). Think of RIR as a measure of how many reps you've got left in the tank before your muscles throw in the towel.

Scientists crunched the numbers from various studies and found something interesting…

When it comes to gaining strength, how close you get to muscle failure doesn't seem to matter much. The data showed that strength gains were pretty consistent, regardless of whether you stopped several reps short of failure or pushed right up to the brink.

But, when it comes to bulking up and muscle hypertrophy, it's a different story. If you're chasing muscle size, that's where pushing closer to failure seems to make a difference. The study suggests that for muscle hypertrophy, grinding out those last sets to get closer to failure seems to be key. The closer you train to muscle failure (the lower RIR), the more muscle size increases.

So, what should you, as a fitness enthusiast or gym rat, take away from this?

Tailor your training to your goals. Eyeing strength? You've got some wiggle room. But for muscle size, prepare to push your limits closer to failure, which might just be your ticket to Gainsville.

    Im curious if anyone has done the siphox testing yet? The people who I have seen do side by side comparisons with labcorp blood draws were showing some markers were very close and some were as much as 30% off. I was thinking of doing the siphox alongside my next couple of blood draws so I can get an idea of whether they are consistently off in the same direction and amount. Either way you would have to use a whole different reference range for some biomarkers that are just different from this type of analysis
