Are Your Beverage Choices Heightening Your Vulnerability to Disease?
Find yourself yawning over yet another glass of plain, old water? I totally get it. But the quest to discover a sugar-free beverage that isn't crammed with questionable additives? That's a real challenge.
Some intriguing research from a recent study has thrown the spotlight on how your beverage choices can impact your heart health and lifespan, particularly if you're navigating the choppy waters of a gastrointestinal condition such as Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
Here's the lowdown: Over a decade of observations involving almost 2,000 people with IBD tracked the effects of different drinks on cardiovascular disease and overall mortality. And guess what? Unsurprisingly, the results demonstrated that sugary sodas and artificially sweetened beverages aren't doing you any favors.
Downing more than one unit (about one 8-ounce glass) of sugar-sweetened drinks daily was linked to a whopping 64% increase in cardiovascular risk and a 97% jump in the risk of dying from any cause.
And those artificially sweetened drinks? Despite being lower in calories, they're not off the hook either, showing a 78% increase in cardiovascular disease risk. Men seemed to fare even worse than women when consuming sugary drinks, and as you'd expect, those with IBD were at even greater risk of experiencing side effects from drinks with added sugar compared to the general population.
But here's a bit of a silver lining: natural juices, while still sources of sugar, didn't seem to stir up the same trouble. No significant links were found between natural juice consumption and the previously mentioned health risks in folks with IBD.
So, what's the takeaway?
Whether you're dealing with chronic digestive issues or aiming for optimal health, it's clear that what you sip on can have a big impact on how you feel and function. The bottom line is that science proves sugary and artificially sweetened beverages are ticking time bombs for your waistline, heart, and lifespan.
