Conquering Substance Dependency and Withdrawl with Biohacks

If you're facing the challenge of overcoming a substance dependency, whether it's related to alcohol, opioids, or kratom, I have some powerful natural remedies to share that can serve as potent allies in your journey to recovery.

Each of these supplements and tools works differently, so it's important to tailor them to your specific needs and situation — and remember, the road to recovery is unique for everyone. These strategies are here to support you, but they're most effective when combined with professional guidance and a holistic approach to wellness. (Check out this list for more details on the protocols below.)

Supplements:

  • Liposomal Vitamin C: When super-dosed and then gradually tapered, vitamin C helps offset withdrawal symptoms. Start with 1,000–1,500mg every 2–3 hours, gradually increasing to 5,000–7,500mg every 2–3 hours in the days leading up to and immediately following your quit date. Gradually reduce the dose after the third day off opioids or kratom.
  • Magnesium Glycinate: This form of magnesium is gentle on the stomach and helps with sleep and muscle relaxation. A typical dose is 200mg in the morning and 200mg before bed.
  • Agmatine Sulfate: A game-changer during tapering, agmatine helps reduce the amount of opioids or kratom needed, easing the transition. During tapering, take 1000mg about 20–30 minutes before your first dose of the day, followed by another 1000mg before your mid-day dose. Adjust the schedule as needed.
  • Black Seed Oil: Like agmatine, black seed oil potentiates the effects of opioids or kratom, making tapering more manageable. Take a tablespoon 20–30 minutes before your first dose of opioids or kratom, and continue with smaller doses throughout the day.
  • DLPA: This supplement addresses the endorphin and dopamine deficiencies caused by prolonged opioid use. It's a natural way to boost your mood and energy levels. For acute withdrawal, take 1,000–2,000mg three times per day. If used for tapering, 500mg twice per day can be effective. Adjust the dosage after 30 days, or as needed.
  • N-acetylcysteine (NAC): NAC is an amino acid that's a powerhouse for detoxification and antioxidant support, which are crucial for anyone in recovery. A typical dose is 600–1200mg daily. It's important to check for potential drug interactions, especially if you're on prescription medications.
  • Probiotics: Probiotics play an essential role in healing gut damage caused by opioids. The gut, where your body's “second brain” is located, performs many functions, including exerting significant influence over your mood and cognition. There's no specific dosing protocol for probiotics, but consistent daily use is key. Choose a high-quality probiotic supplement and follow the manufacturer's recommended dosage.

Lifestyle Hacks:

  • Hydration: Drugs and alcohol are dehydrating, so aim to drink at least 8–10 glasses of water per day. Keeping water with you at all times makes it easy to stay hydrated.
  • Exercise: Natural endorphins from exercise can significantly improve your mood and reduce cravings. I know it’s hard to get up and do, but once you do, you feel incredible and gain confidence fast. Start with gentle activities, such as walking or sauna sessions, gradually increasing intensity as you feel able. Listen to your body, and avoid overdoing it.
  • Sauna: Sauna bathing is proven to help with blood flow and give you a boost of endorphins. Anytime I go for a sauna session, I feel euphoric afterward. Just be sure to hydrate after with electrolytes.
  • Sun Exposure: Don't underestimate the power of sunlight for your mood, sleep, and immune system. Aim for at least 15–30 minutes of sun exposure daily, but be cautious of overexposure that results in skin damage.
  • Cold Water Immersion: Cold showers might not be your cup of tea, but after a brief period of discomfort, they result in an invigorating sensation as your body goes into shock, prompting the release of adrenaline. Start with 30 seconds of cold water at the end of your shower, gradually increasing to two minutes or more.

The remedies I've shared aren't just helpful for smoothing out the rough edges of withdrawal — they're also useful for supercharging your body's innate healing abilities. Stay resilient, remain dedicated, and trust in the regenerative power of your body.
