November 23, 2021
It's Thanksgiving week.
For many, this means food, family, gratitude, and for much of the unfortunate masses stricken with materialism, retail shopping madness.
Now, while I feel strongly about holidays and life in general ideally not being centered heavily around purchase and exchange of material objects, there is a certain beauty and generosity in the thoughtful giving and receiving of gifts. For me, Christmastime is a celebration of the greatest gift ever given (a story I detail here). But I think an important word here is thoughtful. While it may be tempting to pick up multi-pack of gift cards and divvy them up amongst your list, that is (sorry to say it) kind of equivalent to handing over an envelope of cash, which, while undoubtedly useful to most people, does not convey a significant abundance of care.
Part of what can be difficult about this time of year, though, is that the options for gifts may seem either ho-hum, boring and pretty standard, or possibly limitless and as a result, overwhelming. After all, the mailbox at the end of my driveway these days is filled daily with holiday catalogs (oh, the paper wasted)? And I'm willing to bet that the e-mails flooding my inbox that link to holiday gift guide posts are hitting your inbox daily, too.
So…how is this holiday gift guide any different?
First, most holiday shopping guides are curated by a team of editors rather than an individual. The decisions about which gifts to include are often a sole result of reciprocal relationships between the entity (whether it be a magazine or webpage) and the manufacturer of the product. I decided to instead choose, for this gift guide, only products that I actually own and use and that I'm authentically excited about because they've changed some element of my existence, such as cooking, beauty sleep, or recovery. I'm also going to tell you how I use said product in my own daily routine, rather than just slapping up some copied-and-pasted information about it.
Second, many of the gifts on this list are not going to be showing up in other guides. It seems many other publications have almost a stock list of picks that they recycle year after year, perhaps changing the product itself but without varying what's recommended within each category. For example, women get perfume, a bag, and a candle, while men get a necktie, a cigar, and a pocketknife. I don't bother with categories like those because, frankly, it feels a little stereotypical or sexist (hey, I love a sweet-smelling candle for my office, and my wife digs tools), and it's just kind of unoriginal. After all, how many sweaters do you need? My guide contains health-promoting items that your friend or family member may never have even heard of before—and I think that's a very good thing.
Finally, I've given you options in different price ranges, including several that are on the higher end. That was intentional, because while certainly you may not be looking to shell out thousands this holiday season, there may be a special person in your life that you want to go all-in for with a single spectacular gift. The pricier gifts are also investments, as they can be used for years and years. As an added bonus, I've been able to sweet-talk the companies I've chosen to include into giving me some incredible, significant, and unique discount codes you aren't going to find many other places, if anywhere. In other words, if you like to save moolah, this list is for you. I'm also limiting the list to 16 gifts. Why 16, you may ask? Well, rather than pick an arbitrary round number and then try to think up products to fill the slots, I decided to make my own must-give list and 16 is just kinda where I ended up.
So go ahead and move those catalogs directly from the mailbox to the recycling bin and clear out your email inbox. This gift guide should cover almost everyone on your list—at least, definitely the adults. Think of the items below as (G-rated!) adult toys, and you also have my permission to shop for yourself while you're at it. Enjoy.
Featured Products: Holiday Gifts For Everyone On Your List
The following biohacking-ish gifts are at the top of my list right now—both in my personal arsenal and as my favorites for treating family and friends.
The price points on the four gifts below vary quite a bit, with options for every budget and recipient. What they do have in common is that each of these products are surefire winners when it comes to thoughtful and healthy gifting.
Humans are designed to function with an abundance of natural sunlight, but it's likely that your modern lifestyle does not allow for nearly enough light on a daily basis.
Joovv makes in-home light therapy devices that treat your body with red and near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths of light, delivered directly to your skin and cells. The near, far, and mid-red light heals injuries, muscle pain, assists in workout recovery, fortifies and protects your skin, helps mitochondrial function, and boosts testosterone.
I recently devoted an entire article to red light, in which I detail how I'm closing in on my fifth year of using some form of red light therapy nearly every single day of the year, with it still being an integral component of my daily training routine.
Joovv has several red light therapy products from full-body panels to portable units, and it's the perfect gift for multiple people who live together as they can both/all take advantage of the devices (which, hey, may make this the perfect gift for the special person who lives in your house).
How I use Joovv: Every morning after I make whichever other crazy coffee or tea brew I'm drinking on that day, I go downstairs and do a full-body twenty minute infrared treatment with my Joovv “Elite” full body panel. I also use the Joovv Go when I travel, and if I'm reading in bed at night or in the morning I'll tuck the Go between my legs and turn it on for sexual health and hormonal health. It works quite well for introducing blood flow to that area (nudge, nudge, wink, wink).
2. Aseir Custom
2021 may go down in Ben Greenfield Fitness history as the year of the hair.
In April, I kicked off what I called my hair growth project, trying out products and protocols for growing a fuller head of hair. The foremost experts on hair growth are my friends Jay Campbell and Nick Andrews, the co-founders of Aseir Custom—listen to my podcast with Jay and Nick here—and in addition to the most cutting-edge hair growth formulas on the market, Aseir Custom is the leader in GHK-Cu skincare. (I also talk about GHK-Cu and much more in this podcast with Dr. Cameron Chestnut.)
This holiday season, Aseir has put together two special bundles of their best-selling anti-aging skin products. The Beauty Bundle includes GHK-Cu Royal Blue Serum, GHK-Cu Sky Blue Cream, and Auxano Brow & Lash. The Fountain of Youth Bundle includes all of those products plus Auxano Grow V2 Hair Growth Formula.
Developed by Jay and Nick, who specialize in formulating, biohacking, and biochemical engineering, Aseir Custom’s revolutionary formulas are backed by countless clinical studies and provide proven results. So now you can give your beauty junkie—or again, yourself—the gift of youthful skin and hair this holiday season.
How I use Aseir: Jessa and I use all of the products in the skincare line, but my favorite is the GHK-Cu Royal Blue Serum, which dramatically tightens, firms, and improves skin elasticity, while reducing fine lines and wrinkles in both men and women. I currently use it both morning and evening on my face, beard, and hair.
3. Organifi Green, Red, Gold & Gold Chocolate
Now, as the weather is turning colder, I crave more hot drinks, but I still want to get maximum nutrition out of every sip—and I'm loving Organifi's new Chocolate Gold, a rich, nutritious hot chocolate. Their original Gold—with turmeric, lemon balm, and reishi mushroom—is delicious, too. Beverages like hot chocolate, tea, and coffee are staple holiday gifts for good reason—they're practical yet also indulgent. Gifting a healthy winter beverage treat is a significant upgrade from the typical generic holiday tins.
You also can't go wrong with the classic Organifi Green and Red Juices. Both are jam-packed with superfoods that help you recharge, restore, and rebalance your mind and body. In addition to drinking the juices, I like to use them for rubs for meat.
Organifi's juices are an important part of how I upgrade my nutrition when I’m on the road. And even when I'm not traveling, they're much quicker, more convenient, and less expensive than making your own juices. Organifi's juices are the perfect gift for anyone on your list who cares about packing all of their daily nutrients in—but also has a packed day.
4. HigherDOSE Sauna & Infrared Devices
I've long been a proponent of both sauna and PEMF for health and longevity. (Check out this article “WTF is PEMF?” if you're wondering, well…WTF is PEMF. :) This year, I had the privilege to meet two female biohackers Lauren Berlingeri and Katie Kaps, the founders of a company called HigherDOSE, on this podcast episode, which was such a big hit that I asked Lauren to write an article about the technology behind their sauna and PEMF devices, with a focus on how the products can specifically benefit women (you can read it here). HigherDOSE's products, though, make a perfect holiday gift for any health-conscious person on your list, regardless of whether they're a man or a woman.
The HigherDOSE Sauna Blanket is a portable, convenient way to get a serious sweat going, and mine currently lays on the floor of my office for a quick afternoon nap, often paired with the relaxing vibes from my Apollo, Hapbee, or Sensate. Earlier this year, I gave a HigherDOSE blanket to my mom, who found that after she climbed into it at night it ended up banishing her hip pain with surprising speed and efficacy. Also, the blanket I'm lying on in the picture was custom-made, so you might not be able to get the exact blanket posted here, but they all work exactly the same.
HigherDOSE's Red Light Therapy Mask is a light therapy device that combines red and near-infrared LED technologies. It's the perfect holiday gift because it's affordable (around $260 with the code BEN for 15% off) and who doesn't want to improve their skin? This relaxing and effective treatment warms the skin, boosts your mood, and enhances your natural glow after just a single session. As pictured—yep, that's me—I also like to use the Red Light Mask over the Clay Mask from Alitura (more on Alitura below).
The best part of it all? HigherDOSE is running a special site-wide sale just in time for holiday shopping.
How I use HigherDOSE's products: I now own three of the sauna blankets: one that is currently on the floor of my office that I've been climbing into for my afternoon work siesta, and two more that my 13-year-old sons use while reading up in their bedroom, and their souped-up dry skin brush currently holds a hallowed place in my sauna. Also, as mentioned above, the Red Light Mask plus Alitura Clay Mask is a potent combination.
Stocking Stuffers: Good Things Come In Small Packages
I'm calling the next four products “stocking stuffers” because, well, they can fit in a stocking, but any of these gifts also work wonderfully on their own.
They're each part of my daily and weekly routines, and while three out of the four are consumables, you'll get a significant gifting bang for your buck (especially considering the discounts I've scored for you).
1. Füm “Vape” Pens That Aren't Really Vape Pens
Essential oils are a pretty great holiday gift. You're “essentially” (hah) giving the gift of health, as oils have been shown to naturally alleviate stress, improve sleep, increase energy, promote weight loss, and much more.
My favorite way to use essential oils is with the help of a Füm “inhaler” pen—which also happens to make a perfect holiday gift. Füm is an all-natural, non-electronic wooden essential oil inhaler that doesn’t vaporize or change the state of the essential oils when you inhale. It's so simple and safe to use that even my kids can use it.
There are a number of Füm gift options that include the inhaler pens and different essential oil inserts, which Füm calls “Cores.” including packages for relaxation, focus, physical performance, and even quitting nicotine.
Plus, handcrafted just west of Calgary, Canada, the thing just looks sexy and super functional. Füm also believes in making the world a better place. They use sustainable manufacturing processes and each purchase of a Füm provides six orphans with a healthy meal for the day.
How I use FUM: I take hits on cinnamon and nutmeg for focus, lavender for relaxation, and peppermint for a pre-workout, lung and head-clearing effect. Black pepper is also really good for crushing any nicotine cravings.
2. Alitura Clay Mask
My 40th birthday is coming up in December. And while I certainly do plenty to keep myself young physically, I know it's time to start taking greater care with my skin. My favorite secret weapon for keeping my skin healthy and looking silky smooth is the Alitura Clay Mask.
The Alitura Clay Mask contains a blend of nine nutrient-dense ingredients, including freshwater pearl powder, grass-fed colostrum, and rhassoul clay, which detoxify, purify, and hydrate your skin for a more youthful appearance. The mask even works to rebuild skin fibers to eliminate wrinkles.
Alitura is the perfect gift for the beauty lover on your list, and you can get 20% off the Clay Mask (and other Alitura products) with code BG20.
3. TRU KAVA
A safe, natural alternative to drugs and alcohol may be the next best thing to relieve any unpleasant effects such as anxiety while still giving you an incredible mood boost and enhancing your cognitive performance.
TRU KAVA is a natural drink prepared from the roots of a plant native to islands in the South Pacific, called Piper Methysticum, where it has been consumed for its non-habit-forming relaxing and social-enhancing qualities for over 3,000 years.
TRU KAVA historically has been used by the islanders as a safe, natural alternative to drugs and alcohol, which allows users to loosen up and connect easier during social interactions while maintaining complete sobriety.
Perhaps the main draw to TRU KAVA is that it provides these effects without any of the drunkenness that can impair fine motor skills and it is completely non-addictive. Its effects are often described as a calm, enhanced state of natural sobriety.
TRU KAVA is the perfect alternative to that boring bottle of wine you pick up at the liquor store on the way to your holiday party. You'll not only be able to offer a cool cocktail alternative, TRU KAVA is a great conversation starter.
How I use TRU KAVA: A shot of TRU KAVA if you wake up in the wee hours of the night is super helpful for getting back to sleep, and anything you combine kava with kind of “takes the jittery edge” of said substance, so it goes well with coffee, energy drinks, etc., especially if you accidentally use a bit too much. It's also great as a relaxing alternative to cocktails (note: “alternative” as I don't recommend combining with alcohol—you're likely to get too sleepy).
Kion supports your most joyful, active life with pure, energy-enhancing supplements and functional foods. The line of products from Kion provide a fantastic blueprint for people to tap into their own natural, internal power.
Most of today’s energy products don’t enhance your natural energy. They simply deliver artificial boosts with temporary results, a subsequent crash, or use ingredients with negative long-term effects. In other words, many products give you energy for right now, without considering how they affect the rest of your life.
Kion is redefining energy solutions with products designed to give you energy for life, every day. All of Kion's products are:
- Research-backed and quality-tested
- Made with the cleanest ingredients available to science and nature
- Designed to support sustained, natural energy without the artificial boost or crash
How I use Kion products: What don't I use, is the real question? I formulated the Kion line to adhere to the highest standards of quality and effectiveness, and I really do use every product. If you walk into my pantry, it's basically top-to-bottom Kion supplements. Lately, one of my favorites has been the new Kion Clean Vanilla Protein, which is the new superstar of my daily smoothie (and goes quite well with the Organifi Pumpkin Spice I mentioned earlier).
Biohacking Gifts: For The Serious Self-Optimizer
Now, really, all 16 products in this guide can be considered biohacking gifts as they use some kind of science or technology to enhance body, mind, and/or spirit in various ways. And while there are also plenty of free biohacks, such as grounding, sunlight exposure, and cold therapy, part of the fun of what I do is playing with all these new gadgets.
The following gifts are a few of my favorites for anyone on your list who is dedicated to optimizing their longevity, vitality, and performance.
1. Ra Optics Blue Blocking Glasses
Give the gift of better light with Ra Optics, which has produced the absolute best blue light blocking strategy for when I’m using my electronics and screens during the day and when I'm winding down in the evening.
Staring at a digital screen strains the eyes, leading to blurry vision, headaches, and difficulty focusing. Ra Optics Blue Light Blocking Glasses were created to help you limit your exposure to harmful blue light.
While most lenses on the market do not block any meaningful amount of the most damaging wavelengths of light (despite having hefty marketing claims), Ra Optics lenses have been designed and developed with the world's leading experts on light-protective technology, and utilize the world’s most advanced, proprietary blue light-absorbing pigment technology.
The frames are designed with keen attention to detail and handcrafted using the world’s highest quality materials—Italian Acetate and German-Engineered Metal—into a variety of trending and timeless styles. There is really a frame for everyone on your list.
A while back I put out this video in which I talk about all the benefits of Ra Optics in-depth and why I use them—and you can also see them in action.
How I use Ra Optics: I have a yellow daytime pair that I wear for eliminating screen glare, headaches from device usage, etc. Then when the sun sets, I don my red nighttime glasses to prevent my circadian rhythm from being disrupted by blue light. That's my one-two combo and it works just perfectly.
2. Neurohacker's Qualia Mind
The world of nootropics and smart drugs is deep, complex, and often confusing, but there's one “shotgun approach” product that I stand by as a go-to brain-boosting solution that seems to work fantastically to just about anyone I recommend it to. All of Neurohacker's products are designed to help you effectively regulate your biochemistry and provide you with the tools you need to help your whole being—mind, brain, and body—work together in harmony.
Neurohacker's Qualia Mind supplement has literally changed the way I think, so much so that I have dubbed it the “God pill” for its miracle-working effects. Qualia Mind is my secret for an active and clear mind, helping me to remain focused on the tasks at hand for the day, and get them all done in a productive and efficient manner. It's also fantastic for sleep use—seriously, I dream like crazy when I use this stuff, and I talk about that quite a bit in this article.
This is why I’ll always swear by their products.
Qualia Mind is formulated with a unique blend of vitamins, antioxidants, adaptogens, amino acids, minerals, superfoods, ergogenics, polyphenols, and herbal tonics and is one of the most advanced and comprehensive mental performance products available.
How I use Qualia Mind: This is simple. I take it daily. I mean, it's my “God pill.” ‘Nuff said.
With ChiliSleep, you get to control one of the most important components of sleep—your sleep temperature.
So, how does ChiliSleep work?
ChiliSleep uses water to generate a wide range of in-bed temperature control in our cooling mattress pad. Similar to the semiconductor technology that cools your computer, water passes by the chip, and depending on the direction of electron flow, the water is cooled or heated.
So you can “rest” assured that no matter what your ideal sleep temperature is, you can create it with ChiliSleep—and it stays there.
This is one of my go-to products for a good night’s sleep, as ChiliSleep helps improve the quality of sleep, resets your circadian rhythm, increases your natural melatonin production, and so much more. Goodbye, insomnia!
How I use ChiliSleep: Sleeping in a cold environment is one of the best hacks I have for enhancing my deep sleep percentages and getting to sleep faster. The ChiliPad is the only tool I've found that consistently allows me to attain relaxing cold during sleep, even after workouts or a heavy meal. Both my twin sons own one and sleep at 55 degrees each night, and so do I. Trust me: for sleep, this one is a total game-changer.
Is there anyone on your list who could use the gift of relaxation? Or how about improved focus? Deeper sleep?
A device called a “Hapbee” can simulate chemicals such as caffeine, nicotine, melatonin, MDMA, etc. to elicit a physiological response without the actual intake of supplements, pharmaceuticals, or any other compounds or medicines.
The Hapbee wearable is perfect for both sleep and performance, depending on what you need it for, and you'll immediately notice the difference. No longer will you need to reach for another drink, cigarette, or dose of melatonin. (I talk much more in-depth on the Hapbee wearable on my podcast with Scott Donnell, the CEO of Hapbee.)
There are 20 blends such as Time to Lounge (for relaxation with CBD + THC) and Email Mastery (productivity with nicotine + theobromine). Each blend is formulated to give your body exactly what it needs for the task at hand, whether it's a good night's sleep or getting through that afternoon slump.
And, get this: based on the principles of entrainment, the more you use your Hapbee the better it works. It's seriously so cool to be living in an era like this, where you can take advantage of the benefits of substances without any sort of negative effects (you won't fail your drug test after Time To Lounge, for example) because there's no chemical bind.
How I use Hapbee: I switch up my frequencies throughout the day depending on whether I'm working, napping, or trying to unwind, and I even put it under my pillow when I sleep.
Dining & Drinking: Greenfield Home Kitchen Favorites
Home goods are amongst the most popular gifts for good reason—after all, they're practical, mostly unisex, and generally appreciated.
Still, you may find yourself going back to the same gifts over and over, as while there is nothing necessarily wrong with another candle or dish towel set, my hope is that the gifts below—the final set in this guide, offer you more interesting options.
1. The Boundless Cookbook
Rather than presenting you with a restrictive diet, limited variety of ingredients, or tasteless “health foods,” my goal with the relatively new Boundless Cookbook was to take you on a culinary journey that includes nutrient-dense wild game, fish, and even organ meat recipes, unique and tasty rubs, salts, marinades n’ more, biohacked smoothies and cocktails, and so much more.
I even give you insight into drive and energy-stimulating superfood concoctions and guilt-free desserts that actually taste good.
Plus: You get insider kitchen secrets from the entire Greenfield family that you don’t want to miss out on (and maybe even incorporate into your own kitchen routine.)
My very own Boundless Cookbook can now serve as your trusty “field guide” to keep your cells nourished and taste buds pleased every step of the way.
How I use the Boundless Cookbook: It's basically open constantly on my kitchen counter. Even my 13-year-old sons can make most of the recipes in the book.
2. Artisan Revere Knives
Recently, I was introduced to Artisan Revere knives, and let me tell you, I wish I'd had their chef's knife on hand while I was working on the cookbook above. It's a seriously top-shelf piece of functional craftsmanship.
The folks over at Artisan Revere have steel and research backgrounds, and before they made their chef’s knife, they surveyed over 1,200 home cooks, professional chefs, and custom knifemakers for their feedback.
The chef's knife is incredibly sharp and thin, thanks to the blades being made with a cutting-edge (hah) super steel. In knife geek parlance, it’s “fast” and flies through food. But I'm into this knife for more than just how well it cuts.
But I'm into this knife for more than just how well it cuts. I've never paid much attention to comfort before, but I realize now that no handle-to-grip transition has even come close to feeling “right” until using this knife—it gives me room to choke up and I feel like my hand can breathe. The recurve at the back of the blade also makes the knife safer, because you won’t cut yourself on a squared-off heel.
The Artisan Revere chef's knife is an ideal gift for both the serious cook and the home kitchen enthusiast (and really, for anyone who spends time in the kitchen, which I have to bet is most everyone).
This company also takes customer service to the next level. Artisan Revere’s founder, Dave Olkovetsky, gives his cell phone to every single customer and makes himself available to answer any and all questions.
How I use Artisan Revere knives: I can do long meal prep sessions with the chef's knife and my hand doesn’t get tired because my grip is so relaxed. Seriously perfect for your closest friends or family members who spend time in the kitchen.
3. Fresh-Pressed Olive Oil
Olive oil as a gift? It's actually perfect for that person who “has everything.” Fresh-Pressed Olive Oil is practical, healthy, and—most importantly of all—delicious!
Harvest-fresh extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is virtually impossible to find in supermarkets, which is why my good friend T. J. Robinson searches the world for the best small-farm EVOOs.
I was honestly shocked when I got to try real olive oil for the first time. It's a spicy, complex explosion of flavor and I now know why they're so darn healthy over there in the Mediterranean. Once you try it, you'll never go back to regular, store-bought olive oil.
Who doesn’t love a good bottle of top-shelf olive oil? You can gift a bottle of fresh-pressed olive oil to your family and friends by paying only $1 to cover shipping and T.J. will send you a complimentary $39 bottle of olive oil so you can discover for yourself just how top-of-the-line artisanal EVOO is meant to taste (code is auto-applied when you click this link.)
How I use Fresh Press EVOO: It actually works as an amazing face moisturizer. Just smear some on after your next bout in the cold or sun exposure and it instantly returns moistness and color to your skin.
4. Dry Farm Wines Subscription
Who needs a boring $5.99 bottle of wine you snagged from your local liquor store when you can have high-quality wine instead? If you, your friends, and your family don't notice right away, they definitely will the next morning when their hangover hits…which is why high-quality wine is essential when you’re a wine lover and enthusiast.
Dry Farm Wines stands out from the rest because it’s organically grown on farms with no use of irrigation (hence the name). The wines are made from vines that are generally 35-100 years old, with minimal intervention in the vinification and aging processes. Dry Farm Wines are independently lab tested for purity, and they are also completely sugar-free, making them both keto and paleo-friendly. Perhaps most importantly, Dry Farm Wines are completely free of any toxic additives, with no aroma, color, flavor, or texture enhancements and minimal addition of SO2 (sulfites).
With Dry Farm Wines and their special holiday gifting options, you can send 3, 6, or 12 bottles of reds, whites, or both as a one-time order. Or, for a special someone in your life, you can send a subscription of 6 or 12 bottles on the schedule of your choosing.
Considering how hectic life can get this time of year, and the likelihood that you will need wine on hand for your holiday gatherings, you may want to place an order for yourself. The best part is, Dry Farm Wines offers a 100% Happiness Promise, meaning they will replace or refund any wine you don’t love, with no fees or loopholes.
How I use Dry Farm: I *actually* do indulge from time to time and have more than one drink. Although I don't do it often because the calories add up, I can actually drink *an entire bottle* of Dry Farm and get zero hangovers. Listen to my podcast with Todd White in which we discuss why this is.
So that's it!
From olive oil and wine to “smart drugs” to crazy gadgets you can stick on various body parts to enhance your biology, this gift guide will hopefully serve you well as you begin your holiday shopping journey.
With biohacking gifts ranging from beauty to wine to gear, I tried to include something for just about every variety of health enthusiast out there.
Just be sure to give gratefully, give mindfully, and give with great love this holiday season – and remember that the gifts are just the icing on the cake of a magical season you'll be most blessed by through being with family, mending relationships, relaxing your body and brain, and savoring traditions, people, food, and all of God's blessings, including the greatest gift ever given.
Now it's your turn. I made this list, and I checked it twice—but if I happened to miss anything, or if you have any great gift ideas to share, please leave them in the comments section below, along with any questions you might have about any of the products mentioned above.
